Critic reviews for The Empty Hearse
This was the triumphant return of the most charismatic, most fun character on British television, played by Cumberbatch with insouciant verve. Sherlock wasn't flawless but it was brilliant.
Sherlock is unique among crime dramas in that it refuses to languish in the somber valleys of criminal psychology.
Any concerns that Sherlock might have lost its magic during the hiatus should be allayed by this generally strong season premiere.
It was all good stuff - the performances and production are among the BBC's very best, though some of the techniques used to visualise Sherlock's impressive mental faculties did feel more garish, more intrusive and dated than they have in the past.
It's both great all-round entertainment and a treasure trove for a dedicated hard-core.
