THIS IS WHY manga and anime love stories take so LONG to develop or bloom. A boy will not get much of such indirect communication. Heck, an average grown man in a Western Culture stills wont get hints, clues and other types of indirect communication! On the positive side, this live-action version allows appreciating so many subtle facial gestures that communicate meaning. I truly savored the silent moments. On the other hand, comedically, the anime has so much freedom to convey feelings through caricature, making it very difficult for any live-action effort to rise to its level. For example, the funny faces Nishikata makes in animation are impossible to duplicate for a flesh-and-blood actor. Also, in this version almost all of Nishikata's inner dialogue is gone!!! Plus, the anime delights us with Peanuts-inspired music that surely influences older audiences at a subconscious level. All things considered, this was pretty good! Non-fans might not appreciate all the subtleties hidden in plain sight, though. . . . NOTE: The story is continued in the live-action movie from 2024. See more Read all reviews
