The Player
The Player's convoluted premise weighs down a game cast, bringing nothing original to the table.

Critic Reviews for The Player Season 1
All Critics (50) | Top Critics (27) | Fresh (19) | Rotten (31)
[The Player] which features Wesley Snipes as the head of Los Vegas syndicate that bets on crime... is packed with action (and Winchester's abs) as well as a cheeky, almost campy sense of humor, as if it's fully aware of how silly this all is.
It's hard to quantify but there's something more enjoyable about a program that knows its purpose and function in the TV landscape and doesn't outreach its grasp. The Player is fun, and doesn't really try to be anything more than that.
There are some good action sequences, and Snipes is his usual smooth self, but neither is enough to compensate for the convoluted, leaden premise. Game over.
[Winchester's] a charmingly roguish performer, and in The Player he's well-matched to his character.
Poor Wesley Snipes.
Without a steady spray of sawdust coming from Snipes' direction, there's too much time to focus on the show's loony premise and unspeakable morals.
The pilot is just preposterous both in how it delivers its story, and how it asks audiences to invest in its premise. There's something here, but The Player's first script is nowhere near ready to embrace it.
It veers between deeply implausible to formulaic and slightly predictable. And, when you've got Wesley Snipes and a Vegas setting you expect something more.
If you can get past the outlandishness of the premise, you'll probably like NBC's new drama The Player. A lot.
Wesley Snipes gets out of prison for this story of people who bet on crimes.
Don't bet on this preposterous action drama to hit a ratings jackpot.
In addition to wonderful on screen chemistry and quality narrative ability, what The Player also has going for it is some of the best action hitting prime-time this fall.

Nov 05, 2019I found the show's original concept and all out action invigorating. It's sad when a jewel like this doesn't catch on!
