Critic Reviews for The Gregory Hines Show Season 1

All Critics (14) | Top Critics (8)

The writing seems a little sharper and more sensitive than the standard stuff, and ace hoofer Hines displays a light touch and considerable grace.

Has all the cuteness and lovability of a panda party. That's not necessarily good... Television is a personality medium, however, and Hines and Hammond bring enough of that to the show to make one want to overlook the painful familiarity of it all.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Hines is such a genuine, adorable presence that audiences can't help but feel drawn to him. And his relationship with screen son Hammond is sweet enough to promote hypoglycemia.

Top Critic

It's a slick, companionable comedy and one of the season's few pleasant surprises.

Jul 23, 2019 | Rating: 3/4 | Full Review…

Hines has become an accomplished actor. This particular show lets him be loving toward his son, funny at work and mystified out in the dating world. He pulls off each scenario impressively.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Mr. Hines has never starred in a situation comedy before, but he's clearly a natural at it. His timing is perfect on good punch lines, and he easily saves bad ones.

It's the sweetest little pilot of the season. An absolute home run of a show -- the kind that makes you think somebody in Hollywood is listening.

A cut above most of the sitcoms out there today. It's sophisticated and funny -- but it has a heart.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Viewers will want to embrace this comedy with open arms because of its smart wit and warm appeal.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Hines [is] the smoothest newcomer on prime-time television... Pilot script is funny and heartwarming and has some sophistication, too.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

This is the sleeper of all new sitcoms this fall. Gregory Hines is terrific as a single dad to a 12-year-old boy. Don't miss it.

Jul 23, 2019 | Full Review…

Even if the writing remains lackluster, Hines's warmth and charm may be enough to put this over. But don't count on him to dance over all the dull spots.
