Critic Reviews for The Purge Season 1
All Critics (38) | Top Critics (15) | Fresh (16) | Rotten (22)
The fact that it's also clumsily made and rife with mediocre performances seems almost beside the point in the context of how pointless this thing is in the first place.
To say television deserves better is obvious, so instead let's remember "The Purge" deserves better, too.
So hot on the heels of the other movies, as well as the impassioned state of the country as a whole, it feels too much like an afterthought.
Like its film predecessors, the TV show, often challenges us as the viewers to check in with our own value systems.
This is the best incarnation of The Purge yet. The mythology of the films has been begging to be unpacked a bit, and the series has done that without explaining too much in the process.
It would have been interesting if 'The Purge' used a multiplicity of visions and a longer time to develop the story. [Full Review in Spanish]
After viewing the the first three episodes of Season One, I see "The Purge" as overwhelmingly unsuitable for basic cable television.
The series is a song for cruelty without style. [Full Review in Spanish]
Instead of opening new avenues of what mayhem could occur during the annual ritual of a not-too-far-in-the-future America,... the cumbersome multiple plots of the TV series go for endless and mind-numbing murder.
"Fans of the franchise should find plenty to enjoy in the new series, whether it's the tangents of world-building and deepened mythology, the freaky new masks, or the ensemble of rich characters."
I'm not saying that season one of The Purge was bad, mind you. It had its moments. I'm just saying that it would have been better if it had been edited down to, say, an hour and 40 minutes without commercial breaks.
It also features fine direction and decent scripts. For most shows, this could be a negative. For "The Purge," this might be the best execution of the concept to date

Dec 30, 2020Trash. Fell asleep watching it
-
Dec 06, 2020the thing i liked most about this show was completely different storyline then what you usually get + amazing casting
-
Oct 26, 2020Some dumb scenes and a really pointless death, but otherwise a unique watch. 8/10 considering it's a lower budget and smaller show.
-
Oct 25, 2020Love the movie franchise...was worried that a tv show would ruin it....but it only improved upon it!

Oct 19, 2020I enjoyed season 1. It didn't say a thing new about The Purge that anyone who hasn't watched the movies didn't already know. It involves a select group of people but it also has short opening stories that show how normalized violence has become. But what makes it better than movies was that it was detailed. Low reviews for season 1 are wrong. Was the season perfect? No. It had its problems but it didn't deserved so much negativity. Only giving negative reviews because show had same story as the movie is wrong. Overall, I would recommend anyone to watch this series instead of Purge movie series as this is more detailed.

Oct 16, 2020Not just bloated and boring. Also low quality filming and acting.
-
Jun 06, 2020While the Purge finds itself lacking interesting characters as well as a muddy setup, it delivers the guilty action fun that viewers are looking for.
-
May 09, 2020amazing, kept me on the edge of my seat. better than the movies

May 08, 2020I'm surprised to see a 63% score from audiences. It's usually the critics that get it wrong but even a broken watch is right twice a day. I really wanted to like this series. The pilot episode sets up what I thought would be interesting, complex characters. By episode 2 however, the veneer was uncovered. You have one, 12 hour time period per year to "purge" all of your darkest desires. 24 with Keifer Sutherland would have been a good format for this show, following each character hour by hour on the show is the clock counts down. I'm not sure if this was an issue with the network but there are 10 episodes instead of 12. And looking back, I can see why it was only 10. The acting was moderate for a cable network but there were more than a few cringeworthy moments. There were a couple of interesting story lines that didn't get fleshed out and there were others that were just simply unrealistic, even in a dystopian society. I did stick around for the entire season but I found myself skipping story arcs and characters I didn't care for. It was a subpar freshman season but hopefully lessons were learned for season 2. Fingers crossed. Give this a gander if you have some time to kill and want to just zone-out without having to think so much. I think many of us are currently in that category.
