The Purge: Season 1 (2018)

Season 1
The Purge

Critics Consensus

Bloated and boring, The Purge kills its own fleetingly fun premise and proves that not all stories work better on the small screen.

The fact that it's also clumsily made and rife with mediocre performances seems almost beside the point in the context of how pointless this thing is in the first place.

So hot on the heels of the other movies, as well as the impassioned state of the country as a whole, it feels too much like an afterthought.

To say television deserves better is obvious, so instead let's remember "The Purge" deserves better, too.

This is the best incarnation of The Purge yet. The mythology of the films has been begging to be unpacked a bit, and the series has done that without explaining too much in the process.

It would have been interesting if 'The Purge' used a multiplicity of visions and a longer time to develop the story. [Full Review in Spanish]

After viewing the the first three episodes of Season One, I see "The Purge" as overwhelmingly unsuitable for basic cable television.

It also features fine direction and decent scripts. For most shows, this could be a negative. For "The Purge," this might be the best execution of the concept to date

Instead of opening new avenues of what mayhem could occur during the annual ritual of a not-too-far-in-the-future America,... the cumbersome multiple plots of the TV series go for endless and mind-numbing murder.

"Fans of the franchise should find plenty to enjoy in the new series, whether it's the tangents of world-building and deepened mythology, the freaky new masks, or the ensemble of rich characters."

I'm not saying that season one of The Purge was bad, mind you. It had its moments. I'm just saying that it would have been better if it had been edited down to, say, an hour and 40 minutes without commercial breaks.

Like its film predecessors, the TV show, often challenges us as the viewers to check in with our own value systems.

Audience Reviews for The Purge: Season 1

  • Jul 15, 2019
The Purge is adapted for television as a USA limited series. Season 1 follows a business woman, a returning marine, a member of a cult, and a power couple on Purge Night (when all crimes are legal) as they navigate the dangers and obstacles they encounter. The cast is fairly good and delivers some strong performances. And the writers do an impressive job at building story arcs and at developing the characters throughout the season. Also, they address a number of sociopolitical issues without being heavy handed (as the films often were). Additionally, the show's able to retain the suspense and terror of the films while toning down the violence (though there's still plenty of violence and implied violence). It's not without its problems, but for what it is The Purge: Season 1 is a solid continuation of the film series.

You are definitely not thinking right if you felt this is a boring TV series. Nothing is quite like it. Of course it may have low replay value, but fresh seasons will definitely make this a cult in the future.

Purge Season 1 was enjoyable but doesn't offer anything new. It's just like revisting the Purge:Anarchy, the second installment of Purge movie franchise.

Si bien la serie arranca lento al momento del clímax nada la detiene, Sin dudas una gran temporada y una gran serie.

Pure leftist propaganda. All white people are evil. But none more so than men. Definitely made for an unintelligent audience.

Absolutely atrocious. Very bad writing. It comes off awkward. Bad twists and set ups. Horrible acting. This show is definitely made for less intelligent people.

Season 1 had a great story line and believable characters. Season 2 is odd because we never find out what happened to the Season 1 characters. It's still okay though.

I've watched all the purge movies so I had an idea what to expect. Unfortunately I was wrong. Originally the purge seemed to address the clash between rich and purge and the gap between masked as an action / thriller. To sum up this series? Men are the worst, everything is their fault, I am a strong independent woman who dont need no man.
