The Return of Jezebel James: Season 1 Reviews

December 17, 2020
As with the odious Sex and the City knockoffs Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle, Jezebel James is offering a stale can't-have-it-all characterization of its heroine that's all signifiers and no nuance.

This kind of mediocrity may have worked a decade ago or more - but now its simply too dated to be at all relevant. And the audience is right to expect more from this cast and this creator.

A comedy that's not funny, full of characters that aren't believable, it's one of the most disappointing shows to come along this season.

Coco and Sarah are not strong female characters. They are cliches. The show misses the opportunity to explore the very real issue of women and fertility.

Sherman-Palladino might have had better luck with "The Return of Jezebel James" if she'd made it into an hourlong dramedy like "Gilmore Girls.

"Jezebel James" is truly painful to watch - particularly if you're a devotee of "Gilmore Girls." This is a dish that simply came out all wrong.

Not wholly original, but Posey and Ambrose could nail the material if it were right. But it's not, and "The Return of Jezebel James" (a reference to Coco's imaginary friend from childhood) never connects.

Potential pours from the screen, but the premiere has plenty of problems. People seem to be uncomfortable and trying too hard... By the seventh episode, things are jelling, and the show seems on the way to beguiling.

Most of the jokes in this one fizzle and evaporate, as much as the tired laugh track tries to convince us otherwise.

It's a very special, frustrating kind of bad, one with the power to actually change history.

I would be perfectly happy watching Posey and Ambrose deliver Sherman-Palladino's dialogue for many a week. Unfortunately..., "Jezebel James" doesn't appear to offer much more than that.

It is a fun way to spend 30 minutes, with memorable supporting characters and a unique storyline that has real potential.

Sherman-Palladino forces the sisters on each other out of an almost crippling sense of joint self-interest that's as painful as it is illogical.

Plaudits to Ambrose for her effort to bring some honesty to her scenes, but it isn't enough to keep the show from imploding.
November 12, 2019
There seems to have been a string of bad decisions that led up to the shooting of this sitcom-starting with the decision to make it a sitcom.

Everything about "Jezebel" feels too broad.
