Emma P @Emmywemmy Dec 29 Now this, this is class! I Remember watching this as a tiny girl and love it as much today as I did all those decades ago. John Hurt is absolutely incredible, phenomenal even as the storyteller and captivates you from the very beginning. I think all children should watch these cautionary tales as not only are they immensely magical, they install values and morality. 'A story short' is my favourite but they are all exceptional! One of the best, most remarkable, atmospheric programmes ever made and I'm yet to see better or anything that even comes close. Look out for many a famous face too! Superb acting and unforgettable stories. Greek Myths is also excellent and Michael Gambon is outstanding. Simply gorgeous. See more Spider H @RT73451987 Jul 2 I've always been a huge fan of European folklore, and so it's hard to find adaptations that please me. That said, this was recommended by many of my folklorist friends as a very good series, and they were right. Adapting little-known tales was a bold choice that worked in the show's favour, and as someone who has in fact sat by the storyteller in real life and listened to him tell stories, the show replicates that feeling very well, especially in the way John Hurt's narration is written. The dialogue between him and the dog works well as an "in" for kids and other people who aren't used to the tradition of storytelling, and the unique way the cinematography is done makes this feel like a living illustration, not a tv show. Overall it FEELS like sitting at the fireside with a storyteller, and acts as a sort of class in how that all works. I feel the strongest episode is probably The Boy Who Left Home To Learn How To Shiver, with The Soldier And Death and The Heartless Giant as close second and third. The Heartless Giant in particular teaches the importance of a sad story in a way that offers children and parents a jump-off point to talk about a lot of important concepts that don't normally get addressed. The fact that this was taken off-air because "too many parents called and said it was too scary" is infuriating! See more Read all reviews
