Marco L @decatur555 Mar 7 The Strain is a horror series with a strong identity, especially when it leans into the plague aspect, the body horror, and the sense that everything is slowly collapsing. That is where it feels most alive: the monsters are effective, the atmosphere is grim, and the mythology gives it more personality than many conventional vampire stories. The problem is that the show also drags itself out more than it should, with plot turns, repetitions, and detours that can make it feel heavier than necessary. Even so, whenever it returns to the siege, the chaos, and the creature horror, it becomes gripping again very quickly. I still prefer the novels, which feel tighter and more intense, but the series remains a visually distinctive and often very enjoyable adaptation. The entire series is one story which is to take down the top enemy known as the Master so makes for really cohesive storytelling. How did this get rated so high? First off, part of the plot is a ripoff of Daybreakers (2009). Secondly, it has a million bad tropes in it (like calling a nuclear winter "climate change"...seriously, great way to caricature a real life phenomenon). Finally, the plot gets even more tortured then ever. Everything in every season surrounding Zack and those who interact with him is some of the worst writing of all time just designed to carry along a dragging bad plot. His entire arc should have never been part of this and the series would have been better for it. Then, the whole "should we or should we not set off another nuke" plot is meandering and stupid script bloat. This show is highly overrated from start to finish. The start was actually mid-TV decent but it quickly devolved. Guillermo Del Toro remains one of the most overrated "creators" in the genre. By far, his best work is Hellboy 2 followed by Pan's Labyrinth (which was just a little too pretentious). After that, there is a huge dropoff of mediocre BS worse than the wastebasket of M Night Shymalan rejects. See more Read all reviews
