Tv Season Info

The the first season of this drama series centers around Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the youngest son of a Middle-Eastern tyrant, who left his family 20 years prior and is now a pediatrician in the United States with an American wife and two children. However, he reluctantly returns to his home country for his nephew's wedding, and immediately is pulled into a political crisis when his father dies during a revolution. Bassam is subsequently forced to guide the new president, his violent and dangerous older brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom). In harm's way from the outset, he faces terrorism and assassination attempts, but a startling revelation from his mother throws him into a tailspin and forces him to make a decision about his relationship with his family.

Given the executive producers' resumes... and the stronger moments of the pilot, Tyrant" is worth a chance.

Much depends on what happens in the second episode, but the premiere suggests that Tyrant will rule.

The cinematography is stunning, the music and atmospherics are immersive. With occasional hiccups the acting is mostly subtle. Suspension of disbelief will be required, but Tyrant is worth the effort.

The more unique part of the show, though, could be its exploration of the Middle East at a depth and with a nuance rarely seen on American television.

Tyrant overcame a shaky start [and] proved that initial impressions can sometimes be -- if not wrong -- premature.

[The] viewers get a family soap opera masquerading as something more; a gritty fairy tale in which the Americanized characters are the most virtuous and figures regularly act in ways that make little sense beyond furthering the story.

Some of the acting and directing leaves much to be desired. But because it is such a fresh story to come on the small screen, Tyrant is definitely a must-watch.

While noting the problems with the pilot, I am intrigued by it. I want to see where it goes, and goddamnit, I trust FX, which hasn't let us down yet in the drama department.

It's a show that could start an important dialogue, or it could just be a glossy and opulent family drama. Either way, like Bassam, I feel compelled to stay.

If The Honourable Woman was a crossword without clues, this is more like a shopping list scrawled in felt pen.

Both FX and Howard Gordon have a history of taking big creative swings. In this case, they have a big miss.

Tyrant has all the elements of a great show. The plot is interesting, the characters are compelling, and the cast is great.

Audience Reviews for Tyrant: Season 1

I could not get past the complete cultural misappropriations n rape scenes??...the undertones are disturbing.
  • Jun 08, 2017
Could not get past the second episode, sorry. This series is poorly acted, full of plot holes and situations that are just plain dumb.
  • Aug 07, 2016
Give it a chance. You will get addicted. Season 1 is good, 2 is great, 3 even better!
  • Jul 28, 2015
It's such an interesting plot given our current circumstances but Adam Rayner is really hard to watch. He has this emotionless daze throughout the show and the audience can't seem to empathize with him in any way. IDK if i will even watch the 2nd season unless the showrunner started to crack the whip...

One of the best shows, I hope they don't cancel it.

  • Sep 02, 2014
Loved the Show! Please renew the second season, can't wait to know what happened next!

Tyrant has a poor cast and nearly unbelievable story with horrible twists. Adam Rayner's character is a joke, as most characters are. The spoken "arab-english" is beyond tolerable. I was expecting so much from Tyrant because I love middle-eastern themes (and I enjoyed the teaser) but this is totally unacceptable and many times comic. If it returns next year I'll probably watch it though :p
