The the first season of this drama series centers around Bassam "Barry" Al-Fayeed (Adam Rayner), the youngest son of a Middle-Eastern tyrant, who left his family 20 years prior and is now a pediatrician in the United States with an American wife and two children. However, he reluctantly returns to his home country for his nephew's wedding, and immediately is pulled into a political crisis when his father dies during a revolution. Bassam is subsequently forced to guide the new president, his violent and dangerous older brother Jamal (Ashraf Barhom). In harm's way from the outset, he faces terrorism and assassination attempts, but a startling revelation from his mother throws him into a tailspin and forces him to make a decision about his relationship with his family.

Critic Reviews for Tyrant Season 1

As a creaky, unusually violent and grandiose soap, Tyrant kind of works. But as a piece of revolutionary television, it's a failed state.

Given the executive producers' resumes... and the stronger moments of the pilot, Tyrant" is worth a chance.

Much depends on what happens in the second episode, but the premiere suggests that Tyrant will rule.

The cinematography is stunning, the music and atmospherics are immersive. With occasional hiccups the acting is mostly subtle. Suspension of disbelief will be required, but Tyrant is worth the effort.

The more unique part of the show, though, could be its exploration of the Middle East at a depth and with a nuance rarely seen on American television.

Tyrant overcame a shaky start [and] proved that initial impressions can sometimes be -- if not wrong -- premature.

While noting the problems with the pilot, I am intrigued by it. I want to see where it goes, and goddamnit, I trust FX, which hasn't let us down yet in the drama department.

It's a show that could start an important dialogue, or it could just be a glossy and opulent family drama. Either way, like Bassam, I feel compelled to stay.

If The Honourable Woman was a crossword without clues, this is more like a shopping list scrawled in felt pen.

Both FX and Howard Gordon have a history of taking big creative swings. In this case, they have a big miss.
