Turning trash into cash is Don Short's business. Short owns West End Architectural Salvage in Des Moines, Iowa, a 50,000-square-foot warehouse of reclaimed, recycled and salvaged materials taken from old homes, abandoned schools and turn-of-the-century churches. Short and his team of designers, carpenters and craftsmen re-purpose their finds -- plus those brought to them from local pickers and antique dealers -- and incorporate them in makeovers of bedrooms, basements, living rooms and lofts of their Midwestern clients.
