In the 2000s, producer David Himelfarb's career was book-ended by some later-stage work of famed Canadian improvisational troupe Kids in the Hall. In 2001-'02, he oversaw a couple of specials, and then in '10 he worked on the CBC-TV eight-part series "Death Comes to Town." Instead of the usual multiple character and disguises routine, for this one the kids played circa 2028 residents of a small town where the murder mystery narrative is triggered by the killing of the mayor. The rest of Himelfarb's first decade as a TV comedy producer has revolved around more mainstream fare. He segued first to the Wayans brothers' ABC sitcom "My Wife and Kids" and then to another more adventurous ABC show, "Rodney," starring standup comedian Rodney Carrington. Himelfarb then moved over to the ABC Family channel for the sci-fi series "Kyle XY," his only credit that does not aim for viewer laughs. The '10 Kids in the Hall showcase was a very inventive way for their original home network, CBC, to come up with a new way to mine their versatile talents.
