Born February 3, 1947, Melanie Safka, known simply as Melanie, was an American singer-songwriter renowned for her distinct voice and poetic lyrics. She gained fame in the late 1960s with hits like "Brand New Key" and "Lay Down (Candles in the Rain)," which showcased her folk-influenced sound and countercultural themes. Her debut album, "Born to Be," was released in 1969, followed by a string of successful albums throughout the 1970s. Melanie's music has been featured in films and TV shows, including "Taking Woodstock" (2009) and "The Kitchen" (2019). Melanie's contributions to music and culture have been widely recognized, and she continued to perform until her passing on January 24, 2023, at the age of 77.
