The Golden Spurtle (2025) 93% 4/5 EDIT “An incredibly funny film, with most of the comedy emanating from the disconnect between the competitors’ passion for creating the perfect bowl of porridge and the inherent futility of such an endeavour.” – The Skinny Aug 20, 2025 Full Review After This Death (2025) 50% 5/5 EDIT “Castro demonstrates a deft command of tone as the atmosphere shifts imperceptibly from realism to something more off-kilter.” – The Skinny Aug 19, 2025 Full Review Rebuilding (2025) 93% 3/5 EDIT “Like a country ballad, there’s something undeniably moving in Rebuilding’s almost naive hopefulness.” – The Skinny Jul 16, 2025 Full Review Broken Voices (2025) 80% 4/5 EDIT “Set in the early 90s and shot on 16mm with an earthy colour palette, Broken Voices’ visuals call to mind a faded Polaroid, but the distance in time evoked in the aesthetic doesn’t dampen the film’s power.” – The Skinny Jul 14, 2025 Full Review Out of Love (2025) 4/5 EDIT “Ambrosioni has coaxed smart and nuanced turns from young Varvat and Birman – they deliver two of the sharpest child performances in recent memory – but what most distinguishes Ambrosioni’s approach is his openhearted humanism.” – The Skinny Jul 11, 2025 Full Review The Luminous Life (2025) 3/5 EDIT “Rosas’s filmmaking style is as easy-going and charming as his lead character [...] but this breezy portrait of youthful romance is far from lightweight.” – The Skinny Jul 8, 2025 Full Review The Monkey (2025) 77% 2/5 EDIT “It fails in the most basic requirements of a horror-comedy. A few of the deaths are wince-inducing, but they’re never scary... and beyond a few nihilistic chuckles, The Monkey just isn't as funny as it thinks it is.” – The Skinny Feb 21, 2025 Full Review Queer (2024) 77% 4/5 EDIT “Daniel Craig has surely shaken the spectre of Bond with this twitchy, rakish and deeply compassionate turn.” – The Skinny Dec 9, 2024 Full Review Conclave (2024) 93% 3/5 EDIT “You’ll be thoroughly entertained, but Conclave will disappear from your memory quicker than a puff of white smoke.” – The Skinny Nov 25, 2024 Full Review The Outrun (2024) 82% 4/5 EDIT “"A film full of bold formal choices and vivid imagery, anchored by a transcendent performance that’s more than deserving of the Oscar speculation it's attracted. Like the winds that batter Orkney, [Saoirse] Ronan is a force to be reckoned with."” – The Skinny Sep 23, 2024 Full Review Hoard  (2023) 94% 4/5 EDIT “It's a film concerned with grime, sweat, saliva and other bodily fluids, the textures of life so often sanitised on screen. It’s also a compassionate study of mental health and sexual awakening.” – The Skinny May 13, 2024 Full Review Out of Darkness (2022) 85% 4/5 EDIT “What makes [Out of Darkness] so refreshing is that it's first and foremost a fat-free thrill ride concerned with squeezing as much tension from its smart but simple setup as possible.” – The Skinny Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Passages (2023) 94% 5/5 EDIT “The miracle of Rogowski’s performance is that we sympathise with his plight as selfishness comes home to roost, while also finding comic delight as he scrambles to avert his downfall. ” – The Skinny Feb 7, 2024 Full Review May December (2023) 91% 4/5 EDIT “Melodrama and a generous helping of dark comedy combine in this compelling character study from Todd Haynes, which manages to be hilarious and heartfelt all at once.” – The Skinny Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Saltburn (2023) 72% 3/5 EDIT “Derivative it may be – the plot is a salad of ideas pinched from Evelyn Waugh, Patricia Highsmith and Pasolini – you won’t be bored for a second.” – The Skinny Feb 7, 2024 Full Review The Old Oak (2023) 82% 4/5 EDIT “A deeply moving work from a voice who's still much needed and won't be easily replaced.” – The Skinny Feb 7, 2024 Full Review Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness (2022) 73% 3/5 EDIT “[Raimi's] take on Benedict Cumberbatch’s wizard is totally goofy, endlessly inventive and often makes no sense.” – The Skinny Jul 21, 2022 Full Review Aftersun (2022) 96% EDIT “What makes Aftersun such a revelatory work is the way these inner emotions are never spelt out in dialogue, and instead are wholly expressed visually or through performance.” – The Skinny Jul 20, 2022 Full Review The United States of America (2022) EDIT “Every shot, even the oil fields, factories and opencast mines, has a painterly beauty but this is not a flattering portrait.” – The Skinny Jul 20, 2022 Full Review Triangle of Sadness (2022) 72% 4/5 EDIT “Triangle of Sadness is not particularly sophisticated in its critique of late-stage capitalism. That doesn’t stop its gags from being deliriously funny.” – The Skinny Jul 20, 2022 Full Review Moonage Daydream (2022) 92% 3/5 EDIT “The audio-visual collage is delightfully overwhelming at first, but at over two hours Morgan’s maximalist approach begins to wear out its welcome.” – The Skinny Jul 20, 2022 Full Review My Old School (2022) 92% 4/5 EDIT “The film wryly reveals high school memories to be a curious thing: slippery, subjective and perhaps a little rose-tinted.” – The Skinny Mar 11, 2022 Full Review The Batman (2022) 85% 3/5 EDIT “On the whole, The Batman satisfies. It may continually remind you of other films, the aforementioned work by Mann, Fincher and Lumet, but at least this magpie director is pinching from the best. ” – The Skinny Mar 9, 2022 Full Review Belle (2021) 95% 3/5 EDIT “There's a lot crammed into Belle, and not all of it sticks, but the animation is so consistently breathtaking you'll forgive its unwieldiness” – The Skinny Feb 2, 2022 Full Review Nightmare Alley (2021) 80% 3/5 EDIT “Cate Blanchett is the [film's] standout as a wildly sultry femme fatale who's part Barbara Stanwyck, part Hannibal Lecter.” – The Skinny Jan 25, 2022 Full Review
