Tristan & Isolde

Critics Consensus

Competent but somewhat static, Tristan & Isolde doesn't achieve the sweeping romanticism that it aims for.

Melodrama, but decent melodrama. Gorgeous artistic direction and engrossing story of ill-fated lovers.

Utterly rote romantic drama which retells the medieval legend of Tristan and Iseult. The script is not compelling, the story drags, and the leads barely register any passion whatsoever. If you must see a movie about star crossed lovers, see Franco Zeffirelli's Romeo and Juliet instead.

War, strategy, jealousy, deceit, power, love, honor and duty.
The story takes place after the fall of the Roman Empire. Britannia is left divided after the Romans left the lands as Ireland stands unscathed.

The legend of Tristan and Isolde (Iseult/Yseult) is an influential romance, retold in numerous sources with as many variations. The story has been traced by scholars as early as 1150s.

This 2006 film adaptation of Tristan and Isolde is perfectly blended and well rounded, with a wonderful cast to boot! Watch it if you can!
