What to Know

Critics Consensus

It may not rank with Scorsese's best work, but Shutter Island's gleefully unapologetic genre thrills represent the director at his most unrestrained.

It's not a serious film and it's not even an especially suspenseful film but it is fun, in a Dr Caligari sort of way. Go to Full Review

A twisted psychological thriller that leaves you guessing until the very end, Shutter Island is yet another fantastic collaboration between DiCaprio (giving another pitch-perfect and near heartbreaking performance) and director Martin Scorsese. Go to Full Review

Moni F @RT02436248 3d Wasn't expecting much going in but oh man! was quickly hooked onto the story with in the first 40 minutes but oh man the twist at the end had me sitting in disbelief for 10 minutes never have I seen a twist as good as shutter island easily a 5 star classic and the definition of a must see movie. See more Levon W @RT15731635 4d Hollllly, what a twist, best twist in movie history I’d say. Leo will always be the goat actor, I’ll stand on that no matter what. But great movie, outstanding acting, outstanding plot and story.amazing movie See more Oliver W @RT15253620 Jun 24 Shutter Island is as much a triumph of atmosphere as storytelling. Through striking cinematography, a perfectly chosen soundtrack, and standout performances from Leonardo DiCaprio and Mark Ruffalo, the film draws viewers into a descent into madness that remains elusive until its unforgettable final reveal. See more Wesley S. @Snobby_Wes Jun 22 An eerie, suspenseful thriller with an incredibly immersive atmosphere. The setting and cinematography do a great job of making the island feel unsettling throughout the film. The story keeps you invested by putting you in the guy from the Titanics shoes, letting you share in his confusion and uncertainty as the mystery develops. The twist is handled well and doesn’t feel overly telegraphed, making the ending hit even harder. Some scenes linger a bit longer than necessary to build tension, but they never dragged enough to hurt the experience. The strong ending and overall vibe make this one of the more memorable psychological thrillers I’ve seen. I’d rank it like a 76/100. See more madison C. @unicornluver00 Jun 18 The beginning seemed long but the further along it went, the more interesting it became. Although I partially knew the ending due to spoilers, I still wouldn’t have guessed the ending…worth the watch See more Fiona H @FionaHayden Jun 5 Shutter Island is a psychological thriller that keeps you guessing until the final moments. The atmosphere is dark and isolated, building constant tension. Leonardo DiCaprio delivers a strong performance as a troubled detective uncovering disturbing truths that challenge reality and perception. See more Read all reviews
