Par H @Parhwy Jun 23 Ninja Assassin (2009) is a 99-minute-long multi-national action film I saw on Netflix in June 2026. Other than a short fight in a laundromat, I was not awed by the fight scenes even thought they are all amazingly filmed, edited, choreographed, etc with impressive CGI and audio. The story, plot and denouement were for me a tad too easy to see a step ahead. Just as I dislike slow zombie films (I prefer fast zombies), I prefer my ninjas to be less all-knowing, all-doing super heroes and more just really good martial artists. The blood and brutality is, frankly, cartoonish. Additionally, the conveniences were belief unsuspending. In one scene, a ninja and a non-ninja plan to achieve a goal, it goes haywire, they head in different directions… it seems. Yet they bump into each other. Says the non-ninja character, "I can’t believe I found you!" Me: neither can the audience, love. Rewatch? No. Recommend? Maybe? 4/10. The blood and kills look extremely fake, but I didn’t care because it leaned into the over the top style. Then Han from Fast & Furious shows up out of nowhere threatening people and I was fully locked in. Unfortunately, the rest of the movie kicks in. The pacing is fine and the acting is pretty weak, but for a B-movie action film that’s not a dealbreaker. My main issue is a police subplot that overshadows the ninja story. It mostly exists to explain what’s happening, even with flashbacks, and ends up feeling unnecessary. There’s also a blink and you miss it conversation about gold. The concept is dark and could’ve been great if it stayed focused and cut the filler. Lore is dropped early just to set up end plot armor. That said, I still had an okay time. The choreography and over the top violence carry it, and Raizo’s backstory kept me interested. It’s a good “drink with friends” kind of movie. See more DanTheMan 2 @DanTheMan2150AD Nov 26 Despite setting the bar high with an incredible prologue, the rest of Ninja Assassin barely manages to live up to the potential it initially sets up, priding itself on inventing new ways to savagely dice up the human body rather than delivering anything else worthy of note. For a film about silent assassins, it's phenomenally noisy. While this would have honestly made for a great entry in the Tenchu series, it's so overly serious that it veers into unintentional comedy; any endearing charm in its B-movie aesthetics is lost amid the hard-to-see fight scenes and harder-to-swallow dialogue. You can tell the Wachowski siblings had a hand in this, and not in a good way. Alternating heavily between humdrum sequences of investigatory nonsense, relentless flashbacks and long, gore-soaked brawls, so much of the film feels rushed, incoherent, nonsensical and, for lack of a better word, just plain stupid, lacking any self-awareness. It's a shame because James McTeigue is so clearly capable of better, but his style is unfortunately lost underneath a smattering of cheap CGI and incompetent editing. Rain isn't given much room to display his acting chops because, you know, his character is an emotionless ninja; Naomie Harris keeps the film going as an affable leading lady, but the biggest saving grace for me, at least, was undoubtedly Sho Kosugi as the skin-crawlingly evil Ozunu. It's so nice to see that even after decades away from the silver screen, the man's still got it. While I can certainly appreciate the inherent ambition behind Ninja Assassin's attempt at bringing ninjutsu back to an older audience after a smattering of kid-friendly offerings in the '90s, any sense of excitement and intrigue has been thoroughly beaten out of it by some truly questionable filmmaking choices. A hyperkinetic gorefest that should have remained in the shadows. See more Read all reviews
