Plays like a studio remake of Once, retaining some of the ideas and the heart but bogging them down with clumsy filmmaking and bad choices.

While we've seen Ruffalo in 'down on his luck' mode plenty of times, he carries the film with a warm and engaging performance.

Though there are a few faultless moments, Begin Again's flaw lies in the fact that there's not nearly enough narrative for the runtime; it's more musical montage than movie.

Not terrible but extremely average.

It ultimately passes the authenticity test with flying colors, however, due to strong, heartfelt performances and well-written tunes that dovetail perfectly into and out of Carney's script.

They have good chemistry, and you really come to like the characters. Knightley shows that she's a decent singer too.

It's a friendly little indie displaying some fine performances and a clever storytelling style, even if its musical tastes are far more conventional than they should be for the characters.

The film isn't perfect and it certainly isn't wrapped up in a tight little bow, but all in all, it's a captivating film.

Everyone in this movie seems to be a little bit in love, and never more so than when they're recording on a rooftop in the city, going gorgeously against the grain of how things are supposedly supposed to be done.

The story captures you from the opening scene.

Somehow, none of it quite gels. There's no need for a romance - actually, I applaud Carney for avoiding that clich - but nothing seems to evolve between Gretta and Dan.

Begin Again is essentially the bubble gum pop version of Inside Llewyn Davis.

For all the doubters out there, take note: Knightley can sing.
July 26, 2016
It's in parts painfully earnest, never more so than when Ruffalo sees instruments come to life while Knightley plays alone onstage, but it moves along at a nice clip and the recording scenes are shot well.

It hits the sweet spot of love's tortures and love's ability to heal with overly cutesy situations and its fair share of laughs.
April 13, 2016
Begin Again is the best sort of summer movie, with great performances and a solid core. It's clearly a work that comes from love shared by people who enjoyed making it, and that makes it fun for us to watch out in the audience, too.

The authenticity that was in inherent in "Once" is lost here on a cast of movie stars, and the music isn't quite good enough to elevate a cloying screenplay.

Begin Again is a delight, not only because of its infectious musical vitality but because it follows the unexpected forks in the road.
