A true swashbuckler. Tyrone Power matches Errol Flynn as the quintessential debonaire loverboy pirate. No actress looked better in Technicolor than Maureen O'Hara.

My favorite among pirates. Great photography in Technicolor, despite the year of production. Great cast, with Tyrone Power in the head of the poster and the beautiful Maureen O'hara. Luxury sidelines, like George Sanders and Anthony Quinn.

An entertaining swashbuckler, even if no one gives a standout performance besides Sanders.

Masterpiece! One of my new favorites of Tyrone Power. It felt pretty short for a movie, but I absolutely loved it. This is truly a classic! Rating: A+

Simple swashbuckling film may be the influence for Pirates of the Caribbean, as Tortuga Port Royal and a white dress are all in this movie. Tyrone Power and his rogue-ish charms is solid enough, with one very well done sword fight and not much else. Its a solid adventure film if not much more, could have used more sword fighting.

Although it won an Oscar for best color cinematography, The Black Swan is a rather lacklustre swashbuckler. Perhaps the genre was worn out after the 1930s and the era of Errol Flynn and all those Alexandre Dumas stories. Indeed, this film shares strong similarities with Flynn's Captain Blood (1935) which is much better. Tyrone Power is good here, but although he was known for adventure films, I liked him better in later darker films such as The Razor's Edge (1946) or Nightmare Alley (1947). Also, there are some funny character turns here: Laird Cregar as a mountainous Captain Morgan (yes, of the rum) and George Sanders unrecognizable in a wild red hair and beard as Captain Billy Leach. Maureen O'Hara is fine as Powers' love interest but her scenes are rather static. All told, this is fine Saturday afternoon fare but look to the earlier decade for the good stuff.

Lightsabers? They're only a reflection, an update, but a sure marker of one of the oldest and surest of entertainment outings: the adventure tale. And what could be more thrilling than a knife fight? What about if ya give 'em big knives? And lo, the swashbuckler is born. In this one Tyrone Power (the weakest link here, w/o the dash the role requires), a common, drunken pirate, battles for the reluctant heart of Maureen O'Hara, a fancy Miss Pris lady against a whole slew of dirty, pirating types. George Sanders (the best thing in the movie), Anthony Quinn and Thomas Mitchell lend able, reliable yet unsung support. Big-time old school fun.

TBS features a beautiful Maureen O'Hara - and an even more beautiful Tyrone Power in a pirate swashbuckler that's brimming with campy fun. The beginning is quite slow, but the latter half is a terrific ride - plus, it also features greats like George Sanders, Thomas Mitchell, and a young Anthony Quinn. It's biggest flaw is too much focus on sword fighting and not enough on the characters. 3 1/2+ stars

A guy's movie. O'Hara is so cute and feisty. And the pirate king Morgan was very amusing as he had to put up with foppish island council and made his wise cracks re: O'Hara--e.g. "that idiot child" And, of course, lots of shipboard fighting. I could have done without the "3 times" soppy bit--It ruined that attractive edge of O'Hara's character.

A little more of an Errol Flynn fan. This Tyrone Power 1930's Pirate movie holds its own.
