theguywithawheel23 T @RT70386413 Jan 27 At night, this is one of Scorsese’s most effortlessly entertaining pieces of work (no easy feat). Paced to utter perfection, with barely a moment to hold still between its technical bravado and rarely missed beats of darker than dark comedy. A near Masterpiece in the moonlight. But… there’s a second movie in here, mostly bathed in sunlight, that’s paradoxically quieter, clunkier and unfortunately the emotional crux of our central character’s entire ark (ie. pretty dang important). A few beats of genuine drama aside, these sections never unravels or engage the way it wants too. By itself, it may have worked as a small mediation on guilt and forgiveness. But saddled so tightly with the brawling city lights of New York after dark (where Scorsese unleashes some truly wild adventures with his star studded cast) the two simply do not co-exist together. However, "Bringing Out the Dead" is one of the few that isn't about the mafia, or even Italians, but, surprisingly, about paramedics working in an ambulance. I was expecting a heavy drama, but Scorsese made something between a black comedy and a kitsch thriller, which is generally unusual for him. The film's atmosphere and editing feel surprisingly modern and fresh. The acting is excellent, and there's a serious social subtext. And the film offers virtually no answers about what should be done about all the darkness that people themselves create. Reading the Wikipedia page, interested to learn that Nicholas Cage singled it out as one of his best films, and that Martin Scorcese made it in part as a tribute to the role first responders had played in his life.
