"By the Time It Gets Dark" has clearly been thought through, but it's so cryptic that it cries out for, if not perfect explanations, perhaps footnotes. It's so conceptual that it offers little for those not in sync.
You could be forgiven for thinking that while all this is going on, nothing at all seems to happen - it's a film, a rather gorgeous one, of glances and ephemera and delicate metaphors.
By the Time It Gets Dark is a magical, melancholic ode to the intellectual's struggle against the forces of history.
It's an intoxicating cocktail, with bursts of time-travelling song breaking through the underlying thrum of insect life, leading towards a trance-dance finale that left my head spinning.
Anocha Suwichakornpong's WTF tone poem of a film casts a bewitching spell, even/especially as it periodically reinvents itself. Intriguing and severely beautiful throughout, even during those moments when it seems like logic has taken a flyer.
To call what happens in By the Time It Gets Dark a "plot" is to do it a disservice of sorts, such is the beguilingly self-reflexive nature of Anocha Suwichakornpong's becalmed, trippy, historically conscious fungus of a film.
By The Time It Gets Dark is a cinematic classic that will beg to be watched, decided and marvelled at, time and time again.
History has seldom seemed more challenging. And history on film is a hiding to nothing.
