The unsolved 1996 murder of six-year-old beauty queen JonBenet Ramsey generated a tidal wave of tabloid garbage; this documentary by Kitty Green surfs atop it, exploiting the crime no less but giving it an art-film respectability.

Green's film is difficult and challenging, but it is not lazy. And in a world where these kinds of stories so often are the source of hysterical sensationalism, a degree of thoughtfulness and introspection is long overdue.

This movie is fascinated by our psychological need to judge other people's lives, but it's also deeply mournful, even respectful, of the very human reasons why we do so.

The documentary aims to study the theories of regular people about the infamous unsolved 1996 case of the killing of a 6-year-old girl. But in doing so, it can't help but feel exploitative.

Desperately, these people all want the truth -- as well as the gig -- and that tension is what makes Casting JonBenet provocative.

"Casting JonBenet," is in many ways a deeply unsatisfying, even infuriating film, but I wouldn't want not to have seen it.

Casting JonBenet feels like someone gathered all their true crime friends in one room to discuss theories and then do a mock trial/live-action role-play. It's fun on the page...but it's not something everyone needs to see.
April 28, 2017
Whereas crime docs typically seek to offer everything that is known about a crime, Casting JonBenet proves how little we will ever understand about that night.

It begins to penetrate why this particular tabloid phenomenon resonated so profoundly with Americans.

This is somewhat interesting for 30 or so minutes but grows grindingly obvious as we're reminded again and again that people have feelings and opinions, some dubious.

[A] scavenging, Errol-Morris-gone-wrong art project ...

Alas, here we are two decades later, still enthralled by a media circus that refuses to leave town.

At the core of Casting JonBent is the ultimate actor's question: What's my motivation? Why would Patsy and John have murdered their beloved daughter?
April 26, 2017
Casting JonBent is a curiosity, but an arresting one-an uncomfortable 80 minutes spent with strangers who are undeniably difficult to look away from.
April 26, 2017
What we're watching is a group of ordinary Americans work out, and maybe move past, the dominant public narrative of Ramsey's murder.

Green's doc - like the case at its center - defies resolution or easy answers.

A fascinating and perplexing piece of storytelling.
