Steenburgen saves this tiring drama about a writer and her days on an orange grove.

Cross Creek is a simple but intriguing and inspirational tale of a woman's journey to self discovery with two excellent supporting peroformances (torn and woodard), enchanting visuals and playful score

★★★ (out of four) Some films are really about creating a mood and atmosphere that defines the feel of a certain time and place. "Cross Creek" is a film like that. It succeeds tremendously at surrounding the viewer with the sites and sounds of the swampy Florida town called Cross Creek. Mary Steenburgen stars in the biographical of drama about author Marjorie Kinnan Rawlings, who wrote "The Yearling" as well as several other famous stories. She leaves her husband and moves to a shack in the rural town. There she meets many interesting folks who would inspire her stories and give her a different perspective on life. The film is beautiful and enticing. The story falters a little at times, being too precious and leisurely. But, it still worth a look.

Great performances by Steenburgen, Coyote and Torn, along with some beautiful cinematography make this biopic an interesting experience, even if you have never read any of Rawlings' work.

A very real, personal story, biographical of the author of The Yearling and Jacob's Ladder. The acting is very good, the characters are very likable.
