Director Roger Donaldson’s disaster thriller Dante’s Peak (1997) has aged surprisingly well. I remember this just being some decent fun, but it’s well made and a thoughtful warning to listen to scientific experts on potential disasters. Writer Leslie Bohem writes some interesting characters, but really took all the warning signals of a volcano erupting to heart. The problem is just that once all the volcano action starts, it’s all one long exploding chase. While that was exciting for awhile, I started to get bored by the lack of character arcs. Pierce Brosnan is excellent as the clever volcanologist Harry Dalton. He is cool, smart, brave, and resourceful for a satisfying hero. I wish he got more to do by the end. Linda Hamilton is nice as the mayor of Dante’s Peak Rachel Wando. She has chemistry with Brosnan, but quickly gets little to do by the end as well.
