For a movie that is supposed to "leave you thinking" I found it to be painfully transparent from the beginning to the end. I was honestly expecting the final scene to end with Mario killing both lovers on the spot when he catches them making love — that kind of brutal closure would have felt very on-brand. Despite the sex, drugs, and crime, the movie is really about trauma and that's where the feelings reside. The rest of the movie is modern emptiness, which Noe does well, of a cityscape where only individuals create the meaning but are shapes and colours with no meaning of their own.
