Frankenheimer'a film is a real mess, being both mechanical and almost incomprehensible. Go to Full Review

Is Caine believable as a Manhattan architect? Even one with a Cockney fixation? It doesn't matter, because Caine performances have become axiomatic: No matter what the movie, he's always good. Go to Full Review

It's easy to blame once-talented director John Frankenheimer for making this farrago unwatchable, but the more likely obstacle is that the Robert Ludlum source novel is cinematically intractable. Go to Full Review

The Holcroft Covenant delivers exactly what it promises, good old-fashioned thrills and spills by filmmakers who know exactly what they're doing. Go to Full Review

Tim R @RT11130394 2d It’s always difficult to watch a film for the first time when it has aged badly. Especially one in which the almost always excellent Michael Cain is debased by a howling script. And boy does this howl. They might have got away with it if they had played it for laughs, because this is so bad it crosses over into parody. I kept expecting to see Leslie Neilson of ‘Airplane’ appear at any moment. ‘Don’t call me Shirley". It looks as if it was filmed over a bank holiday weekend by an early learning film crew because the real talent was on holiday. Honestly, Sir Michael Caine must look back over his distinguished career and think…"Great times…except Holcroft. Holcroft….what a turkey." And if he does, he’s right. Dead right. See more Nigel S @Funkleberry 05/15/2025 The plot of the movie apparently is much less coherent than the book. It was slow and confusing notwithstanding a good cast. See more F R @FR2021 04/14/2025 Cast did an excellent job. Loved the discussion of the "old days" by Mrs. Holcroft and Herr Ober! See more Paul L @RT23288545 03/26/2025 Enjoyed seeing an old Ludlum book come to life. Michael Cain was great. See more David W @Sternhammer 12/30/2024 The elaborate story hangs together well in my opinion and makes for a gripping thriller despite the multitude of reviews stating to the contrary. There's a great eighties, largely synth base soundtrack which was sadly never released. The acting is very solid with Caine and the cast on uniformally excellent form. No idea why this is so poorly regarded both critically and on RT but my wife and I thoroughly enjoyed it. If you're in the mood for an eighties spy thriller then you could do a lot worse. Recommended. See more 06/07/2021 Must be viewed today (2021) while being aware of the type of film genre this represented at the time (1985) based on this despite Caine taking on the role at short notice it's a great thriller!
