See more 01/13/2022 I seem to remember many films coming out in the years following 9/11 that attempted to justify and even celebrate the war on terror and the US occupation in the Middle East, without ever showing the cost or what happened to those who paid that price. Even when this film falls short with a generic script and some uninspired acting I at least give the writers credit for attempting to show the not so pleasant reality that many who were asked to serve are left with when they return back to society. They also veered away from the standard "US are saviors, Muslims are terrorists" narrative that was pervasive at the time and, even if done in a predictably cliche manner, I give credit for at least questioning and criticizing US motivations by including multiple points of view. A few of the storylines were interesting but some of the acting and dialogue felt so forced and mechanical that it kept taking me out of the scenes. Because there were so many characters, none ever really had a chance to become fully developed, all remaining at a surface level when more exposition with fewer characters could have worked better. Jessica Biel was fairly engaging though and deserves a mention. Even when I may admire the attempt, it doesnt mean I will necessarily love the final product. 4.5/10 Samuel L. Jackson Binge: He gave the most authentic performance in this one for my money and even though some of the scenes with his son felt a bit heavy handed, I was glad to see them included. The opening in the middle of the battlefield is amazing and so well presented that one feels they're smack in the middle of action. But then the rest of the movie is a cliché ridden melodramatic mess. For anyone who has been away from home for a time, especially those whose lives have been spent in a war zone, a return to "normalcy" requires a period of adjustment. It's more difficult for some than others. Had Home of the Brave presented credible stories about believable characters, it might have been a powerful drama. Certainly, the setup is in place for something remarkable. Unfortunately, bad writing and heavy-handed direction have taken this movie in an unenviable direction. Not only is the bulk of Home of the Brave preachy and predictable, but it features some of the worst dialogue to be found in any non-horror film this year.
