When his young children are abducted by his old nemesis, Capt. Hook (Dustin Hoffman) middle-aged lawyer Peter Banning (Robin Williams) returns to his magical origins as Peter Pan. Peter must revisit a foggy past in which he abandoned Neverland for family life, leaving Tinkerbell (Julia Roberts) and the Lost Boys to fend for themselves. Given their bitterness toward Peter for growing up -- and their allegiance to their new leader, Rufio -- the old gang may not be happy to see him.

Critics Consensus

The look of Hook is lively indeed but Steven Spielberg directs on autopilot here, giving in too quickly to his sentimental, syrupy qualities.

It's not fair to kids. With all his technical flair, Spielberg has created the equivalent of the 70-year-old with dyed hair, troweled makeup, in tie-dyes and high tops. And in doing that, messed with Neverland. Spielberg is old enough to know better. Go to Full Review

Spielberg does to us precisely what he does to Peter Banning -- he engineers a return to our childhoods, to experiences both pleasurable and painful. Go to Full Review

The result is his most sentimental film, because unlike E.T. it refuses to take up residence within a child's mind, preferring to stay outside and fantasise about it. Condescension is no way to treat a fable. Go to Full Review

See more Joshua H @JoshuaHawes 11h What a joyful little film, this film perfectly that captures childhood joy with the realties of growing up but ends with celebration of life and the journey that it is while. Robin Willaims plays the role really well and he tells this story as well, Captian Hook is loads of fun as well. Its also able to use the source material to have a great compentry on the challenges of being an Orphan and the celebration of being a parent. Yeah I just had a great time.
