Robert L 04/15/2024 It is one of my all time favorite movies. Definitely my favorite comedy. Great group of actors and non-stop action. However, I have to subtract one star because the same ideas are repeated over and over again- a half an hour could have easily been edited out. I would have reduced the slapstick and put more twists and turns in the plot. [SPOILERS]It is funny how the Ethel Merman character screwed things up for everyone, thus setting the story in motion. If it wasn't for her big mouth, they could have settled on a way to split the money and all slowly drove to their destination, and divided the loot. Also, it is unrealistic that the police could have know their whereabouts at every moment, even by following them with helicopters which, somehow, none of them were aware of. Also, I would have preferred a different ending, with a couple of minutes added after the credits, showing Sid Caesar and Edie Addams still struggling to escape from the hardware store. Stanley Kramer at his absolute best. Very well written and brought to screen. Amazing cinematography, way ahead of it's time. Stellar cast all excels convincingly in character. Epic adventure comedy indeed. More mishaps, misunderstandings, turn of events, silliness, car chases, unfortunate events, fortunate events, calamity, mad rush, drama, suspense and all round breakneck speed pace than you'll probably ever witness in a movie. It is very difficult to make a big budget comedy with so many stars. If you're idea of a funny scene is some guy trapped at the end of a fire engine ladder crying "Woooo" while latter swings around, then this comedy is for you. I saw the original 70mm road show engagement when I was a child and just sat through it, waiting it to end. I felt the comedy was too juvenile when I was a kid. It reminds me of Spielberg's 1941 another big budget comedy that wasn't very funny. See more Read all reviews
