Critic Reviews for My Name Is Khan
Karan Johar's My Name Is Khan is a sweeping epic in the melodramatic Bollywood manner yet emerges as a potent, engaging and timely entertainment.
The real bravery award should go to director-producer Karan Johar, who dispenses with the designer preciousness of his previous films to come as close as this to something real, something important.May 26, 2015 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…
Without any gimmickry, Khan captures the nervous ticks and emotional barriers that an afflicted individual must battle against daily. It's a showy performance but in the right kind of way.
Khan's disorder, clearly used to make our hero a pure-hearted naif, comes dangerously close to being exploitative.
Riotously overstuffed and enormously enjoyable.
It's a rare treat.May 26, 2015 | Rating: 4/5 | Full Review…
Audience Reviews for My Name Is Khan
Mar 14, 2013A awesome film. Bollywoods answer to Rain Man. This film has to move you just a little. Never seen any previews for this one in America. Like I said could have been title Rainman in Love. 5 stars 3-12-13Bruce B Super Reviewer
Aug 08, 2012Spurred by his wife's response to prejudice, a Muslim with Asperger's journeys across America to meet the President. Is this film over-wrought? Yes. Is it melodramatic? Yes, Is it horribly predictable? Yes. Does it pound its audience over the head with its message? Yes. Does the music over-blow every dramatic moment? Yes. Are there maybe two subtle moments in the entire two and a half hours? No, not even two. My Name Is Khan (pronounced "Khan" from the epiglottis) is all of these things, yet I almost loved it. I'm ashamed of liking it as much as I do. I feel like I should have been rolling my eyes instead of wiping tears from them. I think the film worked for me because I'm aligned with its message, and the happy beginnings of the film were just so damn charming. Khan's pursuit of Mandira was remarkably endearing, from the couple's game of hide and seek to Mandira's challenge to find an area of the city she hadn't seen. The film sucked me in with these moments, and I was hooked for the rest of the ride. Overall, it's not a Lifetime movie, but it's the next best thing - a movie in the Lifetime genre done well.Jim H Super Reviewer
Jul 11, 2011Thought provoking, but I feel the movie is subjective (if you know what I mean). Srk and Kajol are Bollywood's solid star. Love the music too.Mesh B Super Reviewer
Apr 03, 2011My name is Khan tells story of Muslim people living in US before and after the 9/11 tragedy. Although the movie is bold and quite a breakthrough in Bollywood landscape, it still doesn't do justice and overall subjective. Sharukh Khan is a great actor, he played an autistic Muslim who travel the continent with one mission, to meet the president and to clarify (based on his wife request) that not all Muslims are terrorist, obviously not him nor his dead son, victim caused by the race riot. I liked him, he gave honest and thrilling acting - a solid reason just to see the movie. Kajol, the dark beauty is also good, I used to love her but she kinda over-reacted at some scene and leave me cringe on my seat. But the chemistry of this two lead is undeniable, dare I say it's more 'real' than any Hollywood romantic couple on screen. Like I mention earlier, My name is Khan is a breakthrough but at the end of the movie you get a mixed feeling, that is it's subjective and not satisfying enough. But, taking in hand a very sensitive matter I do appreciate the director, Karan Johar from his 'escape' of the comfort zone and direct a delicate project. 7/10.Cancelled U Super Reviewer
