    The first half is a bit slow while the characters are all lined up. But the second half is worth the price, with empty city streets, shootouts and a tight car chase finale.

    Director Anthony Mann delivers another tough little film noir. Farley Granger is an average joe who decides to steal a large sum of money and then finds himself being chased down by mobsters. It's a tight story and Mann directed the film with style and doesn't waste any time telling it. A car chase at the end of the film is particularly thrilling, which was nicely done using real NYC locations.

    Anthony Mann delivers a great noir with his brilliant use of the New York City locations and a terrific car chase sequence while Farley Granger and Cathy O'Donnell are in top form in their respective roles.

    A soon to be father and postal worker steals what he thinks is $20 from a locked filing cabinet in a fit of desperation. When he opens up the file folder, he discovers $30,000 dollars instead. Leaving it disguised as a package with a bartender friend, young Joe is wracked with guilt until he is able to rationalize the theft. His wife makes him feel guilty and he tries to return the money, but soon discovers they are a lot more murderous than he would have hoped. At its surface, Side Street is a great concept for a thriller. The movie however quickly loses steam, after his bartender buddy steals the money from him, and a trail of bodies lead the police to think Joe is the killer. A car chase finale is the forerunner of Hollywood car chases, but this thriller's voiceover and bare thin plot do not help. Farley Granger does well as the hapless everyman, and Jean Hagen does well too, but this early noir film isn't one of the most memorable.
