A lot of stunning cinematography and wonderful writing, but I wasn't a fan of the ending.

Solid if undistinguished Burt Lancaster action flick. Burt is a retiring CIA operative who is training youngster Alain Delon, Scorpio, to take his place. But the inevitable double cross happens when Delon is ordered to kill his mentor, which then involves Russians and other assorted spies and killers. While the story lacks originality, director Michael Winner peppers the film with his usual terse action sequences, which is enough to carry the film. Interestingly, director Winner's previous film was the Charles Bronson classic "The Mechanic" where Bronson mentors youngster Jan-Michael Vincent in the ways of being a hitman, who then is ordered to kill his mentor.

Great Cold War thriller with so much more realistic chases than we see today. One of the best speeches by a Communist in a movie. And of course Burt Lancaster and Alain Delon.

Thursday, October 13, 2011 (1973) Scorpio THRILLER/ POLITICAL/ ESPIONAGE Unsatisfying political espionage thriller from director Michael Winner, made famous of the Death Wish movies, starring veteran actor Burt Lancaster as agent Cross, who spends much of the film running and hiding away from political leaders who wanted him killed, especially from Alain Delon as Scorpio, the assassin they hired to execute him, but is always confused himself on whether he should carry out those orders or not. The only positive reason to see this is to see Lancasters performance only that he did his best he could with the material in hand! Made during the Nixon years, one year before he was asked to resign, with more bleak, often depressing political intrigue films continue to come out with paranoid possibilities and this one is no exception. 2 out of 4

Thought this movie was going to be great, but it was all bluster and no delivery.

They don't make 'em like this anymore, but one of very few Michael Winner films I've seen. Its little slow throughout, but no real depth or detail to give the storyline a more sinister view through the life of spy's during the cold war. I'd like to see a remake of this, with an equally good cast, writer and director.
