"The Workshop" never lets us know exactly what anyone really thinks. These tantalizing clues only add to the film's allure.
The leads are excellent...anchoring Cantet's sincere, complex mixture of discourse and voyeurism, as if the undiluted teacher/student naturalism of his 2008 film "The Class" had fermented into something more volatile.
The film keeps you guessing, not only as to where the story's going but what kind of film it will turn out to be.
A thoughtful reflection on the sociopolitical narratives (and myths) of contemporary, crisis-ridden France.
An intimate and timely film ...
Cantet remains a gifted filmmaker ... but this isn't the return to form that his fans have awaited over the past decade.
It's simply yet elegantly shot and the central performances really are worth watching. And in its own way it is, in troubled times, a beacon of hope.
The Workshop is undeniably probing in its twitchy skin as Cantet finds a definitive way to shape his edgy, provocative narrative emboldened by the discomfort of sinister-minded exploration--a powerful and surging literary thriller that soundly percolates
Workshop is right: it feels like the makers are rummaging around trying to find a movie.
As storytelling, it's just not quite a filling meal, for all the feints being made towards a heart-of-darkness journey into French far-right thinking. Even so, there's a great deal to chew on...
If the film's first half is an art-house talk piece, the second half is a drame à thèse crisping into a thriller.
A lively, powerful and intelligent drama.
