While You Were Sleeping Reviews
Due to a misunderstanding, Lucy is believed to be her fiancé. The family falls for Lucy and they welcome him into their family, and she feels obligated to keep up with the charade. Because she does not have any existing family of her own, she feels at home for the first time in a long time. In the process of it all however, she stars falling for Peter's brother Jack (Bill Pullman). The entire thing practically writes itself when Peter wakes up and doesn't know Lucy, he clearly must have amnesia.
While You Were Sleeping is an original comedy with a decent premise. Bullock does a good job as the cute lead that is caring and not trying to be malicious and wants it all to work out. The added arc of Bullock and Pullman starting to fall for each other was an interesting twist to the story. There are a bit too many misinterpretations that aren't as funny as the movie thinks, but they all keep the movie going. When Peter wakes up they did more things with the movie than I expected including him considering himself a new man. This movie is by no means incredible, but its original and has a good enough cast and premise to keep the itself afloat and is better than many other films like it.
Director Jon Turteltaub and writers Fredric Lebow and Daniel G. Sullivan don't disappoint with their feel-good rom-com While You Were Sleeping. Sandra Bullock's starring performance of Lucy Moderatz, a lonely Chicago Transit worker, speaks to the souls of all hopeless romantics. As in her other films, Bullock brings depth, a witty sense of humor, and spunk to her portrayal of Lucy.
Lucy lives alone, with few friends and no living family to spend the holidays with. Every day for months at her job as a token collector at a CTA train station, Lucy secretly crushes on Peter Callahan, a handsome Chicago lawyer who is unaware of Lucy's existence because she lacks the courage to talk to him. On Christmas morning, two men push Peter onto the tracks as they are attempting to rob him. Fearless Lucy jumps onto the tracks to rescue unconscious Peter from an oncoming train. As Peter is rushed to the hospital, a nurse mistakenly assumes Lucy is Peter's fiancé and tells his entire family. Lucy does not have the heart to tell his distressed family the truth so she continues to play along. Throughout the film, Lucy steals the hearts of Peter's crazy but loving family. The plot takes a dramatic twist when Peter's brother Jack starts to develop feelings for Lucy. Peter, unfortunately, can't settle this chaos because he is stuck in a coma.
Like Lucy, you can't help but fall in love with the dynamic and caring Callahan family. Familiar actors like Peter Boyle, Jack Warden, and Bill Pullman's playful banter and fatherly advice remind us all what it's like to be a part of a loving family that stands together regardless of heartache or trial. Part of what makes this film so entertaining is the contagious and clever chemistry between Bullock and Pullman, who make this humorous romance both relatable and worth watching. Viewers anxiously watch this story unfold in hopes that Lucy and Jack will end up together. Despite its title, "While You Were Sleeping," is definitely a film you won't fall asleep in.
