Critics Consensus

Absentia sticks too closely to the procedural handbook, leaving its capable lead and mildly intriguing mystery treading water.

Once lost in the streaming wars, this psychological thriller rises again thanks to Netflix and introduces Stana Katic to a new generation waiting to be rocked. Go to Full Review

The double-episode opener sees several incredible plot leaps in order to keep the action pumping. And a warning for those who prefer to avoid screen violence: the scenes of Emily's torture are disturbing. Go to Full Review

Katic is better than the so-so script. Go to Full Review

Mostly, though, the show suffocates under filler: endless chasing, running, driving, false leads, and random hallucinations. It’s trash. Go to Full Review

Maria R @Mhr_94 Jan 29 The main character comes out of a 6 year long abduction that included a lot of water, with perfectly plucked eyebrows and mascara still applied... Come on. Acting and dialogue is wooden and stilted. The decision making of the characters is so weird from the beginning that it took me out of it. The sound design is also way off, shifting between whispering and so loud that I had to adjust the volume multiple times before I was halfway through episode one. See more Marcia S @Marciaps Jan 18 This review is an alert to the writers who are making this horrible mistake in many series. Season 2 episode 2 we can see Emily giving insulin to a woman possibly suffering from hypoglycemia. In reality she would have killed that woman. You don't give insulin to a diabetic who is unconscious. You give sugar. Research before you put this absurd on the screen. People are not stupid. The series is okay. Acting is very good. See more a r @ARob76 Jan 16 It is a an interesting idea, that Emily has been captive 6 years and her son doesn’t know her and husband stopped looking for her, found someone new and married. However, the major flaw was lack of anger she has towards husband (Nick). It’s almost bizarre that she isn’t angry at husband for replacing her not only in his own life but also her sons life. What’s more bizarre is presumably she owned half the property with her husband, but there’s no offer from the man who moved on at the drop of a hat, Nick, of helping her or providing for her. I found it odd that Emily came back and he didn’t offer to support her to recuperate, give her half the property, and instead uses her for cases, which reinforces that he’s selfish or she means nothing. In fact, no one is kind enough to her. So I then kind of lost interest and my brain switched off from caring. Episode 2 is even crazier. Her ex colleague and Nick let her be interrogated. With PTSD, while recovering from being taken! I switched off! See more Matze T @SoundSmith Jan 13 Not the worst series I've ever seen, but definitely one of the worst. At first, I found the story quite interesting, and for a few episodes, the series managed to grab my attention in some way. However, my interest waned quite quickly. The actors are average in terms of their acting. But what bothered me most was the incredibly poor sound design. The voices in the dialogues are often poorly mixed, and the sounds don't match the images at all. Guns all sound the same, and sometimes you can't hear a shot at all. Action scenes are poorly filmed and create little to no suspense. In some places, I also can't really follow the characters' reactions. All in all, as I mentioned at the beginning, it's not the worst series, but it's definitely not good enough for me to watch the second season. I had no idea who the perpetrator was until the bitter end. Stana is beautifully stealthy and cat like, I don’t get why so many people don’t like it! I had to write something on here. The guy’s acting who plays her brother is great too! See more Read all reviews
