Adventurer/survivalist Bear Grylls hosts and narrates this six-part docuseries, which draws attention to the volatility of Mother Nature and the resilient animals that survive Earth's most extreme habitats. Each hourlong episode characterizes one of the planet's roughest environments -- including jungles, mountains, deserts, oceans, the poles and grasslands -- and how each of its inhabitants acclimate to its turn of events. As Grylls guides viewers through these extreme locations, the incredible ways in which animals have adapted to survive against all odds are celebrated. Academy Award-winning cinematographer and director Guillermo Navarro ("Pan's Labyrinth") is among the executive producers.

Having repeatedly shown the effects of climate change throughout the past hour, it feels feeble. These days, it's not good enough for documentaries about the state of the natural world to be so timid or unthinkingly optimistic. Go to Full Review

Much of the footage in these series is simply jaw-dropping. Go to Full Review

Hostile Planet isn't easy to watch if you find yourself rooting for cute animals who seem to find themselves in dangerous situations. Go to Full Review

Touching on all threats to life on this planet - both natural and unnatural - certainly part of what makes Hostile Planet a fascinating program, though an increased focus on the latter threat would have better demonstrated just how fragile all life is. Go to Full Review

08/17/2021 Gave it about 20 min, flits between 3 different species already. Camera work is very good tbh, but it's showing species do things I've seen over n over for the last 30 years. Doesn't seem to be any extra insight or detail than before. but it does seem to mention the climate over n over to the point it sounds stupid, drama climate climate temperature, every problem each animal has is the climate - well they are doing stuff I've seen them do for decades they don't seem to be acting any different, no new behaviour, it just said the largest gathering of those monkeys on the planet. I've not counted but it seems like it's mentioned heat, temperature n climate about 30 times in 17 min without it adding anything useful to the dialogue. Heat climate heat and now it will starve if it doesn't make this kill - but u only just shown the animal, it doesn't look underweight why can't it keep trying? Many predators have high failure rates, isn't it normal? U not shown any build up or background of it getting weaker n failures over that last few days- then it cuts off n doesn't even show the result of the chase, what happened to it? The stars given are only for the image quality on that alone I'd give it 85% but everything else spoils it. See more Read all reviews
