The interest in the immigrant success story and ossified old-country values wanes as formula takes over. Go to Full Review

Despite the boundless glamour and endless riches, we're left with the sense that when the patriarchy grips so tightly, if you are a woman, such wealth is little more than a gilded cage-not exactly an uplifting watch for the holiday season. Go to Full Review

Shallow as these shows may seem, they're not mere exercises in vapidity. Go to Full Review

02/14/2021 Looking forward to Season 2 if it ever happens See more 12/24/2020 I enjoyed this show so much that I binged watched it! I hope there will be another season. See more 12/24/2020 This show is fascinating and entertaining!! See more 12/21/2020 I'm glad that there are more Asian families on TV but…. This is not like Fresh off the Boat or Kim's Convenience where we can all relate to the nuances of immigrant parents and connect over a laugh. It just felt very phony and contrived. The wife is boring? Let's throw in Aunt Tina who I found to be a bit off-putting, not endearing at all. Not enough of a story line? Let's create a family dinner where the daughter tells the parents about her divorce in real-time (yeah right) or let's schedule an intervention for the cameras. Need to glitz it up? Create a high stakes poker game on TV in a state where gambling is illegal. I just didn't connect at all with the characters. It felt like a mediocre reality TV show with some Asian people thrown in to make it more ethnically appealing. I am a reality TV fiend but unfortunately will not be recommending this to anyone. See more 12/20/2020 All Asians Look Alike. That must be what HBO and the producers of this show think. The Singaporean family in Kevin Kwan's books and this family from Houston are nothing alike – societal or financial. I've never heard of this family and none of my Asian friends from Houston have either. Perhaps they should look up the Westlake Chao Family. Everybody knows who they are, and they are the real deal: Forbes Top 50 list, major philanthropists, live in the exclusive part of River Oaks. There are dozens of prominent Asian families in Houston. These guys are boring, unaccomplished and not even remarkably rich. What am I tuning in for? Either the show's creators didn't bother doing their homework or else it was easier to just pick any Asian family and simulate great wealth with some gold facials and staged dialogue. It's not like people can tell the difference right? See more 12/18/2020 FAKE, ENGINEERED and definitely not CRAZY RICH!!! As a lifelong Houstonian, I was mortified at the fiction they were projecting. Living in a $2 million dollar house in River Oaks does not make you the head of a dynasty or a "scion." Anyone can become a member at the tennis club they were at and its cheap to join. Renting a small private jet for an hour to go to Dallas for shopping is silly and tries too hard to look lavish. My guess is that the car driver is a rent-a-driver. Everything feels super scripted and is trying to portray a "reality" that is not there. The wife works as a pharmacist and FYI, nobody calls their pharmacist a doctor. She should keep her job though because it won't be long before her husband and the sister burn through the money the dad has managed to accumulate. I don't take issue with any of these things but don't try to promote these people as part of Houston's super rich or even the uber wealthy by Asian standards. I'm not saying that you can only show super wealthy Asians on TV but that's what was advertised so that's what I logged in to see. The viewers are being mislead! See more Read all reviews
