Critic Reviews for Marlon Season 1
All Critics (10) | Top Critics (6) | Fresh (5) | Rotten (5)
It over-blows everything in service to a star who doesn't know how or when to stop.
The strongest impression left by the two-episode premiere is that Wayans' stand-up act is probably hilarious, and that he shouldn't be wasting his time in this loud, broad sitcom.
The comedy doesn't take off as it might have were it not trying too hard to be a family comedy.
Marlon is trying to co-parent his children while navigating an amicable divorce... That reinterpretation of the foundation of the family sitcom makes Marlon a refreshing take on family dynamics. Everything else about it feels pretty standard.
Although Marlon may not come close in quality and sophistication to, say, Modern Family, or even The Middle, it's modestly enjoyable and a smart move on NBC's part.
As impressive as Wayans' skillset is, Marlon is too much Marlon.
Ultimately, Marlon will appeal to Wayans' fans, but folks looking for a unique comedy won't find it here.
It's silly and sweet and depends entirely on the appeal and the comedic chops of its star, which, thankfully, are considerable.
Marlon is-well, ordinary.
For all of it's modern touches, Marlon is entertaining in the same way that some of my favorite sitcoms of the '90s were.

Jan 09, 2021quite fun and watchable
-
Aug 26, 2019I love the show on how its about family, struggles, and comedy.
-
Jul 28, 2019For a "divorced" couple they're too involved in each other's lives outside of the care and well being of the kids marlon is trying to hard to be funny at the same time stepping further away from the plot line. It has its funny moments but at the same time they're divorced they need to display the realness of divorce in home

Nov 21, 2018Some moments are quite enjoyable and the concept of the show is good but I feel like a show that literally uses the word "black" as a punchline doesn't serve comedic justice, just a little too on the nose there.
-
Aug 24, 2018A modern take on one of the besf 90s show my wife and kids, marlon has slot of charm and laugh out loud moments.

Jul 04, 2018The show was good but i wish people would call the wayans brothers out on talking bad about black women! He referred to his wifes dark skinned friend as a nappy meal? Day time tv and making fun of black women yet again and im light skinned so... But yea it was funny but too much negative punch lines about black women when will that shit stop?,
-
Jun 30, 2018marlon himself is always funny. and there are some decent side characters. but the show tries to be too family oriented and gets serious/emotional at least once an episode. i still fount a good amount of enjoyment from it (1 viewing)
