Tv Season Info

The first season of the mystery-thriller series based on a novel by Stephen King opens with a man in a clown mask driving a stolen car into a crowd, killing everyone; the crime is then investigated by Detective Bill Hodges (Brendan Gleeson). Two years later, Bill Hodges is now retired, but is still haunted by the case of "Mr. Mercedes." When the killer himself, Brady Hartsfield (Harry Treadaway), leaves a message on his answering machine taunting him, the former detective launches himself into a dangerous game of cat-and-mouse. He's helped by his neighbor, Jerome (Jharrel Jerome), and Janey (Mary-Louise Parker), the sister of the original owner of the Mercedes.

David Kelly and Stephen King have been entertaining the masses for many decades now, yet in Mr. Mercedes, they're both doing some of their best work in years.

This is an all-star crew operating at near the peak of their abilities. It makes for a tight, terrifying story of a retired cop and the madman who got away but won't go away.

Mr. Mercedes is premium-unleaded nightmare fuel right out of the gate, without even a touch of the strange or supernatural.

Aug 7, 2017 | Full Review…

The drama comes off as an unappealing combination of Stephen King's most ghastly horror moments mashed into a hard-boiled detective story. It doesn't earn its violence, even with a game cast and compelling ideas.

Mr. Mercedes is a fine example of something that has been less frequent over the years -- an effective Stephen King adaptation carried by strong performances and smart writing choices.

The performances are strong throughout the show and writing is solid as well. Unfortunately, even the well-written dialogue is held back.

The genius of this series was that all of the characters, even the most minor, were so quirky and so well cast that they seemed to have lives that extended beyond their presence on screen.

The bedrock is King's book. TV hasn't always done justice to fiction's greatest living storyteller. Mr Mercedes looks like it will.

I may have my quibbles about some of it, particularly in terms of the unnecessary changes, but overall, it's a pretty solid adaptation to date.

David E. Kelley definitely still has it, but working with some constraints - adapting a novel and/or working with a forceful director like Bender or Jean-Marc Vallée - makes it easier for him to remind us of that fact.

Audience Reviews for Mr. Mercedes: Season 1

Certain novels would make great films and I honestly thought this Stephen King book was better suited to the cineplex, I was wrong. Great cast and creepy premise that grows better with each episode. Unsure where season 2 will go, but at least this show received a season 2 and 3 for that matter. I've joined this series at the right time and fingers crossed 2 and 3 deliver. 05/06/2019

Good. Half true to the book , which was much better, but still worth the time to watch.

I don't get the high reviews. I read the book which was really good but the tv series feels like a low budget, b/c-level adapation. I'm on episode two and will likely pull the plug. Defiintely not worth the $1.99 per episode on Amazon.

WONDERFUL . Great acting and wonderfully directed. Would HIGHLY recommend. Stephen King be proud.

Hadn't read any of the books this was based on but gave it a try as it was based on a Stephen King book. Pleasantly surprised at how good this series was. As a fan of Stephen King, and even some of the worst King film/tv adaptations, I'm used to sitting through at lot of cringey/cheesy acting. I'm happy to say there wasn't a lot in this series with all the actors managing to portray the recurring characters in a mostly believable way. Brendan Gleeson and Harry Treadaway manage to pull off the main two roles in the series perfectly and can't think of any other actors that would do a better job. Special mention for Robi (Robert Stanton) and Lou (Breeda Wool) for their shop based scenes. Having spent many years working in similar environments they pull off the sort of relationship I've seen a lot of - Employee who doesn't really want to be there but needs the paycheck and Manager who is desperately trying to get ahead despite unreasonable targets from above. Really looking forward to the 2nd series when I can find some time.

It's been a long time since I've seen such good acting go to waste. Every one of them is pitch perfect. Watch this only if you're a fan of the art form.
  • May 24, 2019
Amazing merciless show about a serial killer playing a cat & mouse game w/ the detective that's trying to catch him & it having real repercussions!

Compelling, edge of the seat, nail biting TV. The lead character is as endearing as he is repellant and his arch nemesis is as weird and awful as they come. This is a world peopled with dark, deep and multilayered characters. Couldn't stop watching.

Great adaptation from the book, looking forward to the next season.
