PHOENIX RISING follows actress and activist Evan Rachel Wood as she takes her experience as a survivor of domestic violence to pursue justice, heal generational wounds, and reclaim her story. Almost a decade after escaping a dangerous relationship, Wood co-authors and successfully lobbies for passage of The Phoenix Act, legislation that extends the statute of limitations for domestic violence cases in California. Wood courageously uses her own experience to bring visibility to the issue; ultimately, in solidarity with fellow survivors.

More than just a truly shocking account of the physical, sexual and psychological abuse that Wood suffered at the hands of rock star Brian Warner... It’s also a rare examination of coercive control. Go to Full Review

While the two-part documentary series is directed by Amy Berg (Deliver Us From Evil, An Open Secret), Berg wisely lets Wood be the ultimate driver of her own story, making for an unflinching tale of abuse and what it takes to survive it. Go to Full Review

See more 07/14/2022 I was a fan of ERW's acting and she always played the troubled b*tchy teen really well but this documentary was silly. She is portrayed as an innocent Bambi in an evil underworld. She is just a victim of her family, the acting industry and of course Marilyn Manson - who she got involved with as a consenting adult (18 IS A LEGAL ADULT) and the worst thing I got from this is that she cut an M into herself. I'm sure MM is a freak but this comes as a surprise to NO ONE. I dont think its right for anyone that gets involved with someone as an adult to run their dirty laundry and cancel them. I think its good that she is trying to help DV victims by extending the SOL but the more I watched the less I liked her. I can say I am not a fan anymore See more 07/04/2022 Pretty hard to look at Marilyn Manson the same after watching this, and very brave of Ms Wood to lay bare her experiences and trauma. The documentary opens with some concepts around abuse that interestingly intersect with the tactics of cult leaders – just compare what Wood describes to for example the NXIVM cult (e.g. branding, sleep deprivation, starvation). It then recounts Wood's relationship including some really disturbing depictions of physical and psychological torture. Finally, it shows Wood understanding what happened to her, working to change the laws that make getting justice difficult, and finally calling out and filing charges against her abuser. The doc also briefly explores Manson's background and the ways in which what used to be thought of as his "ironic commentary" on issues such as Nazism in reality appear to be acting out his deepest fantasies for power and control. See more 06/08/2022 A bizarre look into the world of desperately dishonest women seeking attention & money regardless of the cost to anyone, even themselves. I can't believe anyone is buying this "too innocent for this world" act. This basically reimagines ERW as a dolly that has no identity or agency of its own. Also features her kidnapping her son from his father from whom she's withheld visitation since. See more 06/06/2022 rachel is so brave for exposing all this. i hope manson goes to jail with his best friend. #IStandWithEvanRachelWood See more Read all reviews
