Torn from his homeland and separated from the woman he loves, Spartacus is forced into slavery and condemned to the bloody gladiator's arena in Rome. As he navigates the violent and brutal world he realizes that not all battles are fought in the arena, and that he must overcome treachery and temptation to survive. This retelling of the story of Spartacus is rife with blood, violence and sex, set to the sounds of jarring guitars, so it's definitely not for the younger crowd.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

War of the Damned is a gory, operatic, and soporific conclusion to the Spartacus saga that will obligingly sate fans' lust for blood and glory, although skeptics will likely remain unimpressed with the series' schlocky theatrics.

The backdrop this time is a whole theater of war, not just an arena. The stakes have been raised, and the bloody conclusion is in sight. Go to Full Review

stefan C @RT89536469 Jun 8 Like 300 but more Violent Sometimes its looks fake. But also not only Arena fights just war! See more Mike B @RT75673500 06/24/2024 Loved it was really gutted that the show finished. Both me and the wife have rewatched since definitely recommend See more Jonathan K @NojEsco 08/03/2023 While still not perfect, 'War of the Damned' is not only as engaging as previous Seasons, but actually removes a lot of the more frustrating elements, and those that would normally frustrate (such as good-guys fighting amongst themselves, when the enemy is vastly more powerful than they) actually end up making things more compelling. The increase in action, as well as improvement to the show's CGI, do help make the battle sequences compelling on a large-scale, and I love how brutal some of the kills are; if you want catharsis, this show certainly has good amounts of it (we're not talking The Raid levels, but good amounts nonetheless). I also really like how it continues to (accurately) depict the Romans as vain, self-absorbed murderers, but ones also capable of intellect - they aren't uncivilized, but they are certainly not as civilized as they believe themselves to be, which accurately reflects history. What makes the show excellent, however, is that it works on both Id-level and Intellectual levels as well; the dialogue is harsh but ultimately Shakespearean, both armies use clever tactics to gain the upper hand, and character motivations are often times multi-faceted, which acts in stark-contrast to all of the blood and nudity. This is an intelligent show, with well-constructed characters (if only a handful getting proper arcs), the stakes continuously elevate, and everyone remains consistent, never acting out of character, at least blatantly. This Season also demonstrates perfectly how underappreciated Composer Joseph Loduca is - his music in this show is frequently breathtaking, often going with choirs, or alternately, hard-rock (but not inappropriately incorporated). It's fun, it's brutal, it's smart and it's engaging, and these are pretty much what something like this would strive to be, and for that I'd strongly recommend this show, with this final Season being the apex.
