Critic Reviews for Stargate Universe Season 1
All Critics (23) | Top Critics (10) | Fresh (14) | Rotten (9)
Stargate Universe isn't quite so ambitious, but it's intriguing in its way, down to the ship, bathed in blue light, that emerges as a character in its own right.
An eye-catching new series
Stargate Universe aims, bluntly, to make the Stargate franchise hip and flashy to a new generation.
After a shaky start, the show developed into something much better than expected, with the unwilling and unprepared crew regularly at risk from internal power struggles, alien attacks and mysterious forces.
True, "Stargate" fans likely will climb aboard this spaceship. But if this series is ever to really take off and become stellar, it will need more surprising stories and more intellectually challenging drama.
It all makes for an intriguing setup that doesn't quite gel, even by the end of the third episode.
Now here's Stargate Universe, which - judging by this double length opener - creators Brad Wright and Robert S. Cooper might equally well have called Stargate Galactica, Stargate Trek, or even Stargate Lost.
Cap it off with one of the most intense cliffhanger endings any sci-fi show has ever given us, and you have a fantastic first season.
I am not compelled to disembark with them. Not yet.
Destiny is on for a pretty spectacular ride in Season 1 and if you go along for the ride it can be a pretty fulfilling adventure.
SGU just might be the sound of a well finally running dry.
Given time, Stargate Universe may become worth watching if it develops its characters and continues to mine its premise for stories.

Dec 27, 2020Not the best but still good Stargate show
-
Nov 30, 2020It is different from the other series, but that is fine. It goes off and doing its own thing, while still tying into the greater Stargate mythos. It was shut down too soon.

Aug 13, 2020Series one of this is basically everything sg-1 wasn't, and i feel bad i was recommended it. It doesn't have a good feel to it & it essentially dumbs everything down to "smart man bad, cause smart, jarhead in charge cause military." It's annoying & serves to add nothing to the universe beyond "ooo big ship that we apparently havn't even started exploring or barely at all!"

Mar 11, 2020I am a huge Stargate fan, and I wanted so hard to like this show but it was sooooo badly written. The performances by Robert Carlisle and Lou Diamond Phillips and the occasional cameo by RDA were enjoyable but the rest of the show was just squandered potential.
-
Jan 12, 2020This is the worst show in the history of television.
-
Dec 23, 2019Not the Stargate we wanted. A sad way for the franchise to end.
-
Dec 06, 2019They set up the show really nicely to continue for many seasons, a shame it only lasted 2.

Apr 03, 2019Watching the show with the flu, season one was really much better than I imagined. I'm sorry I missed it. The characters and conflict were more complex than is typical of Stargate and the subtle sense of menace and obsession in Robert Carlyle's performance was fantastic. There was a sense in which it was kind of wish fulfillment for nerds and gamers...the nerd who plays video games, Ely, turns out to the problem solving hero of the series, trapped on an advanced spaceship. The cast overall had chemistry in Season 1 and the problems of depression, borderline personalities, and the need to work together to survive are all very Lord of the Flies, but there's a sense of psychological realism to it all. I wish I had seen it before it was cancelled.
-
Jan 29, 2019The adult stargate I wanted.
-
Apr 24, 2017Never watched a show where every single character is completely unlikeable. Like watching Jerry Springer in Space
