Critic Reviews for Childish Things

I loved seeing Lucy and Jimmy work through this issue in a very mature way, and I'm very excited to see Lucy more often!

This complicated relationship between Winn and his father gives Jordan a chance to really shine for the first time on Supergirl, giving the role depth beyond the character with unrequited feelings for the lead/the tech wiz.

Supergirl is about a pretty young woman who can fly. But the show also poses arresting questions about the assertion of identity and individuality in a world that is most comfortable with conformity. Fear, rage and hate are its thematic backdrops.

Credit where credit is due: Supergirl excels at thematic writing.

Remember how I told you there's a good story in this episode, but it's undercut by some really dumb stuff? This is what I meant.

This is the best performance I think I've ever seen Jeremy Jordan give in anything, and Henry Czerny was a wonderfully disturbing presence as Toyman. I hope he returns.

Henry Czerny (Revenge, Mission: Impossible) was very good as Toyman, who was scary and homicidal and yet still loved his son - most creepily articulated when he said that no matter what happened, including them both being jailed, they'd be together.

Czerny is actually perfectly cast as Toyman.

The Toyman... is a generally dull but inoffensive Superman villain, and he would have been a dull but inoffensive villain of the week under ordinary circumstances.

"Supergirl" isn't the most subtle thing on TV... But they've always had a knack for letting Kara Alex (and Melissa Benoist and Chyler Leigh) feel honest and genuine, and it's nice to see that energy translate elsewhere in the cast.
