"The Girl from Plainville" is a pretty decent series based on a real case. The series starts off strong with intrigue but quickly starts to feel repetitive and dragged out. I think Elle Fanning does a great job in the main role but the show mostly just starts spinning its wheels and I feel like it could have been told in much fewer episodes or even as a movie. Overall, it doesn't always work as a miniseries, but it has good performances and tells the story in an acceptable way.

Spoilers: This case is very disturbing and thought-provoking. And Elle is such a gem, who made this series' heart beat. But sometimes you can't win the race if your horse is too slow. And this did drag. Maybe 5 episodes or 6 at most? Had that feeling after establishing scenes that it was just fill much of the time. And all this with Elle and sis Dakota as executive producers, which means their hands might have been tied by the producers and directors, not to mention the writers. I do wonder why the prosecutor, Aya Cash, and that one cop, AuCoin, who fought for this case, did it. Were they chasing better jobs, fame, more money, riding a well-known case there. But if they had pristine motives or not, you are taking a big risk trying to plow new legal ground, so it took guts to press the case. And the other thing I wonder is were Michelle's lawyers incompetent? Seems to me the judge, MacKenzie, goes one way or another. Did they misread him going in, as he ignored the medical expert? But if you have 12 wild cards in a jury, all it takes is one to get an acquittal even if 11 go the other way. Everything turned for the judge on how her actions helped lead to the kid's death, as he called that wanton. It mattered not to the judge that Michelle and Coco agreed he would kill himself, and it would not be the end for him or them, as they believed they'd meet in heaven. Some of the scenes of fantasy singing and dancing, meeting in a bar, and outright delusional encounters with Coco by Michelle seem to argue that she had either a personality disorder or a mental illness as big as Coco's. The judge didn't think it was even relevant to answer the question of would Coco have done it anyway. He looked at just that night when he exited the truck filling up with CO, and she told him to get back in, which he did, and died. The judge ignored what Coco might have done later as irrelevant. Ask yourself if you think Michelle should have been convicted of involuntary manslaughter, when she seemed throughout as not just eccentric or prone to lying and unreality, but was also a narcissist who spent much of her time seeking attention. The headlines that got somebody something, got her not much but a ruined life. Through it all, was 15 months for homicide, starting four years after the suicide, then busted down to release at 11 months "for good behavior," enough? And did the judge convict solely because he wanted to be elected again by people who would remember he let her off after she had told Coco to get back in the truck. Chloe was good in this, and prosecutor Aya, as well as Colton Ryan as Coco (Is Coco his real nickname?). The corollary is that freedom of speech is not inviolable, like yelling fire in a theater is not protected speech, nor is telling your boyfriend to go ahead and kill himself. Watch your mouth, and your texts. Reminds of Jodie Foster's Oscar performance in 1989's "The Accused," where her lawyer Kelly McGillis got convictions of bar patrons who only cheered on and urged on guy after guy who raped Jodie on a pinball machine. Didn't watch their mouths.

62%. Pretty slow. Acting isn't great. Would rather watch the hbo doc than this version.

Good atempt to raise the awarenes, but I found it very confusing and hard to follow the story. You have to pay close attention to know what date it is and if it's before or after the tragedy. Actors were fantastic, but could have been done better.

It passed the time, but it was boring. The mystery of what happened to Coco never twisted or turned. The characters didn't have much tension or progression in their relationships. And maybe 3 or 4 times during the season, there was a particularly campy moment (ex: her reciting the grieving scene from Glee) that -- while funny and interesting -- felt offkey with the general tone. Just a slow, drab, straightforward recounting of some events. (SPOILER) But I liked the final shot of her and Coco's phones sitting side-by-side in an evidence box.

For a limited series based on true events, the show is so innovative at indulging us in the stories of the characters in a way that makes the viewers understand the background of each without much dwelling. This helps ground the story around Michelle and Conrad's relationship, with the surrounding character development complementing the main storyline. It also helps seamlessly integrate bits and pieces of the main characters' struggles outside of their own relationship into the main storyline, showing how truly complex teenage growth is in an era of social media, family struggle and generation gaps, and mental illness. The way Michelle's and Conrad's text conversations are portrayed is absolute genius and truly gripping. Texting, in my opinion, is viewed as a crucial form of expression and communication for teens; especially in a long distance relationship. To have the emotional expression of texts acted out in the manner Elle Fanning and Colton Ryan managed was a testament to both their talent and the choice of casting. Not only that, but the method also showcases Michelle's overthinking with pinpoint precision, especially in the last few minutes of the show were she and Conrad talk in an empty bar. In terms of ethicality, I think the show does a really good job at pointing to Michelle's reckless behaviour without adopting a vilifying narrative. At the same time, it shows just how much Conrad's struggles are important to address, and that the ways of doing so need to be re-imagined and re-thought. In other words, the show shies away from the traditional protagonist/antagonist approach to storytelling, showing that there really are no good guys and bad guys in a story like this. My only question mark on the show is on how much the production took the perspectives of the real families and victims into consideration. Regardless, the moral of the story as well as the way it was adapted and explained is important to be understood, which I think is the main purpose of the show overall.

I actually tuned in for the live televised trial. It was extremely interesting and it set a new precedent for the law. And the evidence that was brought fourth during trial sickend me to my core. Eyebrows was a terrible person. A real villain. Yet ,the entire show centers itself around the convicted violent criminal with a weepy tone, as a person who struggled to maintain friends, was depressed herself, as if this somehow justifies anything. The audience is bragged along this boring ride I can only assume to empathize with her. Yet I stayed with it because I maintained the hope the true story will come up during the trial scene. And boy was it NOT worth the wait. The trial scene was such q momumental let down, it cannot be properly fit the written word. The show does a terrible job illustrating the magnetude of her horrifying behavior nor the implications the trial set for the law. An unbelievable disappointment. Do not watch this show if you hqve suicidal tendency, bc this show has the potential to puah one over the edge. 0 stars. I want my time back.

Good cast, based strongly on the factual case; but it was executed poorly. The consistent flipping between past and presence was poorly explained. The pointless fantasies Michelle has serve no purpose.
      • May 30, 2022
A waste of Elle Fanning. What could have been done in 3 or 4 episodes is dragged out to 8 episodes. Why? So they could inject musical numbers and dream sequences into a story about suicide and manslaughter.

There is a fascinating story to tell here, but the writers and directors had no idea how to tell it. They managed to turn intrigue into ennui. An opportunity to discuss some important issues are dissolved by pretentious writing and direction.
