The madcap antics of four cute boys -- Davy, Peter, Micky and Mike -- who make up the rock 'n' roll band the Monkees are captured in this freewheeling 1960s series. It employs all sorts of stylistic tricks, including film-speed changes and cutting one-liners as the boys travel around making the world a happier place.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While shamelessly derivative of The Beatles' cinematic outings, The Monkees will make a believer out of viewers with their anarchic spirit and appealing music.

Copy or no, it's the most unusual half-hour comedy to premiere on television in a long, long time... For sheer escapism, this series beats Gilligan's Island, I Dream of Jeannie and the now defunct likes of The Munsters, hands down. Go to Full Review

This series starring the male singing group is a fast-paced, tongue-in-cheek affair that doesn't take itself very seriously, thank heaven. Go to Full Review

If one looked for much rhyme or reason in the ensuing shenanigans, he found virtually none. But therein lay most of the charm. Go to Full Review

The Monkees just has to pick up the marbles as the most original situation comedy swinger of this or any other recent season. Go to Full Review

Through the use of stop motion, slow motion and fast motion, dialogue "balloons" and a wide assortment of sight gags, director Jim Fawley's charges easily established their welcome by adults as well aa by their junior viewers. Go to Full Review

The Monkees is a blatant copy of The Beatles' now classic A Hard Day's Night. What was spontaneous in movies is calculated and repetitious on the home screen. Go to Full Review

Mike P @RT77437476 08/31/2023 Interesting show; about this fictitious band The Monkees; which is clearly a spoof on The Beatles; and this show is an ongoing extrapolation on Richard Lester's classic rock documentary "Hard Days Night...". In many ways this show broke the mold for sitcoms: it was one of the FIRST to stop using a laugh track. Also it was an obvious antecedent to shows like Friends or Girls; shows about twentysomethings living on their own for the first time; so it broke the mold in that way too. And while the music of this "group" was wildly popular; rivaling even the Beatles briefly; I mean they had 6 top ten hits from 1966-1968... But then the show was a ratings dud. It never cracked the top 40. The critics gave it good notices; but the teenagers back then were obviously scared off by it's edginess; because the ratings were awful and it was cancelled after two years. But then, like the Brady Bunch; it finally caught on when they showed it in reruns: and became wildly popular in syndication. Leading to even further albums, hits and concerts years later! So it's definitely a successful show; but it's route to that place was a unique one! And for any detractors who say the Monkees isn't a real band: consider this; though they were hired by a studio; Screen Gems; as part of a planned sitcom project; the band members all used their real names; they all sang and played instruments; they were all good musicians in their own right before this; they wrote their own songs; which turned into hits; (in addition to covering many Niel Diamond written songs as well). And they continued to tour on their own; and release songs; even years after the studio fired them! So how much more of a real band do you get than that? The Byrds, were a cover band; as was Three Dog Night; both hired by studios to perform studio songs. So why are they thought of as real bands but not the Monkees?!
