Children's book editor Sarah Tomkins decides that something is missing from her life, despite a no-strings romantic arrangement with handsome businessman Marcus Sonti and plenty of ego-stroking support from assistant Buddy. Her impulsive decision to have a baby, however, hits a snag when her doctor tells Sarah she can't get pregnant. More determined than ever, Sarah tries to coax her estranged younger sister, Coco, into carrying the child for her. Coco isn't on board with the idea, however, until Sarah announces she is turning Coco's imaginary childhood friend, Jezebel James, into a new children's book character.

What to Know

Critics Consensus

Despite Lauren Ambrose's honest performance, The Return of Jezebel James collapses under its cliché female characters and lack of humor.

As with the odious Sex and the City knockoffs Cashmere Mafia and Lipstick Jungle, Jezebel James is offering a stale can't-have-it-all characterization of its heroine that's all signifiers and no nuance. Go to Full Review

Coco and Sarah are not strong female characters. They are cliches. The show misses the opportunity to explore the very real issue of women and fertility. Go to Full Review

This kind of mediocrity may have worked a decade ago or more - but now its simply too dated to be at all relevant. And the audience is right to expect more from this cast and this creator. Go to Full Review

A comedy that's not funny, full of characters that aren't believable, it's one of the most disappointing shows to come along this season. Go to Full Review
