McConaughey and Harrelson don't just fill out these characters, they disappear into them, delivering two of the best performances you'll see in TV or film this entire year.

It's a winner. But it's also an oddball, and a weirdo, and an interesting-cum-strange companion, and someone - um, something - you won't mind spending time with.

True Detective has some tangy dialogue and it can whip up an ominous atmosphere, rippling with hints of psychedelia, but these strengths finally dissipate, because it's so solipsistically focussed on the phony duet.

It's perhaps a good thing that Season 2 seems pretty straightforward about what it is, which is a California noir involving a murder and a shady land deal. (You could do worse.)

The show's creator, Nic Pizzolatto, brought to the script, the eight-part series focused on the on-again, off-again bromance of Marty Hart and Rust Cohle. And that's what made the series so polarizing

The more people talk about HBO's True Detective, and all the Yellow King and Five Horseman clues regarding the identity of the sadistic serial killer, and the greatness of Matthew McConaughey's performance, the more mystified I become.

True Detective has the aggressive casualness and dense texture of a novel by a writer who doesn't care if he's only ever going to be mid-list.

The wasteland noir of True Detective is many things at once - an enthralling murder mystery about history, culture, and heroic character; a tour de force for stars Woody Harrelson and Matthew McConaughey.

Though the crime story is gripping and suspenseful, what will keep viewers coming back to True Detective is their curiosity about what will become of Martin and Rust, whether or not they succeed in solving the crime.

The eight-part series, created by Nic Pizzolatto, succeeds on every level, with two big stars doing some of their best work, twisty plotting, super-smart writing and atmospheric directing.

Despite [the] positives, things start to go off track as early as the second episode.

Every cut, music cue, and bit of dialogue-as-voice-over contributes to the sense that the show has a grand design, or is at the very least commenting on our need to believe that all things happen for a reason...

Its dreariness makes it a bit of a slog, and a risk - viewers don't seem to be taking to these downbeat dramas as much as they used to.

It has the feel of an indie film spread over eight episodes starring two of the best character actors in the business.

It's about whether our lives really matter at all. That's scarier than the scariest monster.

A beguiling and moody mess, a narcotic with nearly no addictive effects.

He's [McConaughey] spectacular in this role of a detective unyieldingly confident in his views of life and society-they're not sunny-and in what morality requires of him.
