Some ambitious but flawed dramas get better the more you watch. Tyrant is not one of them.

While its lack of political commentary may have been a conscious exclusion, "Tyrant" needs to find a voice somewhere.

[The] viewers get a family soap opera masquerading as something more; a gritty fairy tale in which the Americanized characters are the most virtuous and figures regularly act in ways that make little sense beyond furthering the story.

The cast, and the potential arc of the well-performed lead, will keep audiences interested but this show needs to be more engaging on an episode-to-episode level soon or they'll move on.

It's just a good story, cleverly told.
June 25, 2014
Tyrant is just offensively boring.
June 25, 2014
It's intriguing to watch such a familiar story in a setting so foreign to most of us, but the political realities raised by the show are oversimplified and unnuanced, Arab Spring 101.

It's as if nobody sat down and thought about how ridiculous this story is before presenting it as a very serious tale.

The creators of Tyrant seem so concerned with politics, pageantry and preconceptions they forgot the most important thing: People.
June 24, 2014
Nothing could seem less appetizing at the moment than a clumsily written and stultifyingly acted TV drama stocked with tired and terribly broad notions of Muslim culture in a make-believe nation on the brink.

The first episode of Tyrant... is both exotic (the cultural elements surrounding the wedding are fascinating) and unfortunately trite, to the point of embracing stereotypes about the Middle East that some early viewers have found offensive.

Tyrant strives to be big, momentous and powerful. But while sometimes jabbing to good effect, it lacks a heavyweight's punch.

It promises to explore another world, but instead it's like a tour from inside a speeding limo, the air-conditioning blasting, the tinted windows rolled up.
June 24, 2014
In Tyrant, the antihero steps out onto the front page, and then, as front pages tend to do, lies a little flat.
June 24, 2014
Stuffed to the gills with soapy family psychodrama and syrupy political intrigue, Tyrant simply has no room for the detail and care necessary to get a story like this right.
June 24, 2014
Tyrant is well made and enjoyable, but the fish-out-of-water subplot is the show's weak spot.
June 24, 2014
Given the executive producers' resumes... and the stronger moments of the pilot, Tyrant" is worth a chance.
June 23, 2014
Much depends on what happens in the second episode, but the premiere suggests that Tyrant will rule.
June 23, 2014
It's a solid but not particularly distinguished effort, one that requires a significant suspension of disbelief to explore its insights about the Middle East, and the nature of the strongmen who have held sway there.
June 23, 2014
In essence, Tyrant is a ruling-family variant on The Godfather, shifted from Italy and America to the Middle East. But don't dismiss the shift out of hand: That move is precisely what makes Tyrant so intriguing -- and so troubling.
