Uzumaki — Season 1

What to Know

Critics Consensus

While Uzumaki's animation curiously spirals into an uneven swirl after a strong start, the terrifying allure of Junji Ito's source material lends hypnotic power to this miniseries.

What Uzumaki never loses is the core idea that the human body is a malleable, spongy thing, available to absorb both kindness, compassion, and good energy and malevolence, evil, and brutality. Go to Full Review

Logan D @Greynomad38 Mar 16 The people of a town are tormented by a supernatural force that manifests as a mental obsession with spirals that leads to physical transformation. Pass the escargot, please. Based on the famous horror manga by Junji Ito, without ever having read that work I could tell they sported a fidelity to his art. The film is more effective because of it. Not only is it a superbly weird story but I actually felt this was illustrations brought to life. The tale is episodic, featuring the experiences of various persons of the town. I enjoyed camera movements that emphasized spiral patterns and the cosmic horror and it's ramifications to humanity are similar to Lovecraft without copying him. Highly recommended See more Caden K @Sleepypasta Feb 25 This show presents two main elements: a stunning visual experience and an often comically underwhelming storyline. The early episodes started off very strong, but by the 3rd and 4th, the plot not only became overly speedy, but the speculations characters present about happenings became absurd and difficult to relate to. It is hard to find oneself agreeing with how any character behaves throughout the series, even the characters who are not yet under the influence of the "spirals." The story seems fantastic in idea, and rushed in execution, presenting the viewer with confusingly random series of events that somehow feel redundant after each other. The ending feels a lot like an internet creepypasta more than a meaningful story, and it is hard not to feel disappointed that something more had not been done with what was initially seeming like a cool concept. See more Helene H @Helene19 Dec 25 First of all, I gave it this rating because, well, there are some good things (the voice acting) and that's about it. At best, it might appeal to those who haven't read the manga. Because the pace is too fast, and they cut off too many passages (which becomes incoherent) See more Due F @RT14704568 Nov 11 Uzumaki, the animated adaptation of Junji Ito’s horror manga, delivers a hauntingly systematic story despite production struggles during the pandemic. Its black-and-white visuals capture a chilling atmosphere, though the animation quality left many fans divided. Still, the series’ unpredictable narrative and eerie cliffhanger make it a must-watch for devoted Junji Ito and horror enthusiasts. O roteiro começa bem mas descamba nos 2 últimos episódios. A edição também picota drasticamente nos dando a sensação de censura. Uma pena. See more Edward H @RT64631131 Oct 26 Uzumaki is a visually stunning and surreal adaptation of Junji Ito's spiral-obsessed horror. The black-and-white animation and swirling imagery create a hypnotic, unsettling mood, though the episodic structure can feel repetitive. As a horror lover, I appreciated the body horror and cosmic dread, even if the narrative leaves some questions unresolved. See more Read all reviews
