Edward L @Glyndower Aug 31 The original 'Van Der Valk' was one of the best and most popular British detective series of the 1970s , its theme music made No 1 in the Hit Parade and was used as the jingle for Oranjeboom, a Dutch lager. These reboots are worthy successors. Marc Warren, who often plays villains on British TV, is superb as the abrasive VDV and is supported by an excellent regular cast. One minor problem is that the casting of non-native English speakers in supporting roles often leads to rather wooden performances as they do not get the subtle inflections of English speech. Also Season 4 introduces an annoying story arc involving VDV and an ex which seems simply an excuse for some barbed repartee between the two. Nonetheless one of the best police procedurals on TV. In the UK this is usually shown as three-hour TV film but abroad each story has two parts. See more Aly L @RT93882986 01/15/2025 Ahoy, ahoy, de beren boot! Met dikke beren, klein and groot! * Eh… I’d actually call it “Autumn in Amsterdam”. And I wonder where is Citra? * Yes… Setting a bird free is a nice symbol, but that man, Coby’s dad, is right. Birds born into captivity simply cannot fly free as they won’t survive in the wild. Piet is just a hopeless romantic :) Worst cynics come out of hopeless romantics, they say. * I’ll still give it 3.5 stars for Amsterdam views and team’s usual fun and banter. Also for glimpses of bright ideas, spoken and unspoken truths. For Piet, Lucienne, Julia, Hendrik and, okay, okay, Eddie and Cliff. And of course, for Piet’s (well, Warren’s) sleight of hand tricks and his ability to control the dilation of his pupils, so the only thing you see then is two ice-blue iris disks. It’s a shame this time preaching and melodrama got a little too much. Everything is good in moderation. However, I have to say, people are so scared of such things in our day and age, that a bit of teasing there might actually be not a bad thing %-) * Because, look, people are afraid of being silly, scared of flirt, risk, laughter, worried of melodrama, age difference and being told what to do, etc., etc., etc. But you cannot always be so uptight. Some things just cannot be programmed. There has to be some spontaneity in life. In a good way, of course. I think this film can offer all that to the more caring viewers. It can teach you a thing or two about life. * The Brits, they… managed to make things Dutchy! This is how I know the Dutch — full of heart. * All in all, I loved this series. Thanks for the atmosphere, guys! And see you on the canals! See more Fleep T @RT57957758 11/05/2024 I normally love British crime drama, but the badly cast Marc Warren and who-even-cares plots on this one are just so painful I can't put myself through to the end of another season. How did it manage so many renewals? Amsterdam looks amazing but not sure that's enough. See more Paul W @RT41616437 10/16/2024 Absurd plot. Melodramatic. Cardboard cutouts for characters. Juvenile. See more Tina P @RT75412234 10/15/2024 I love Mystery and British drama in general however sometimes I can't suspend my disbelief all the way to the end. I mean really Cobie doesn't know that her father is looking for her even though she has a cell phone and can email Gerda? There are more and more of these logical inconsistencies in modern drama and it makes it difficult to emphasize with the characters. Although I did think that Piet shooting the hatchet out of Anna's hand was a nice touch. See more Read all reviews
