Rulon Gardner was an American wrestler who made history at the 2000 Summer Games in Sydney by taking home the first gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling for an American Olympian. Born and raised in Afton, Wyoming, Gardner's childhood was spent enduring hours upon hours of physical labor on his parents' dairy farm. Despite the grueling schedule, however, the intense physical work would serve the young boy in later years, as he embarked on a career as a professional athlete. A gifted athlete as a youngster, Gardner's plans for a sports career were nearly derailed in grade school when he was accidentally shot with an arrow in his abdomen. Thankfully, the injury was not severe, and Gardner was able to make a quick recovery. He turned his focus to Greco-Roman wrestling in grade school, and by high school he had become one of the most talked about athletes in Wyoming. After high school Gardner spent two years at a small college in Idaho, before transferring to the University of Nebraska-Lincoln (UNL). It was at UNL that he earned top honors as an All-American in Greco-Roman wrestling. Gardner graduated from UNL with a degree in physical education, and quickly set his sights on competing in the Olympics. His big opportunity came in the year 2000, where he overcame strong odds against him to win big against the undefeated Russian Alexander Karelin, thus taking home America's first gold medal in Greco-Roman wrestling in Olympics history. Gardner attempted to repeat his gold medal win at the 2004 Olympics in Athens, but was overmatched by his opponents, and took home a bronze medal instead. Gardner retired from wrestling after the 2004 Olympics, and soon embarked on a new career as a sports analyst. He started covering Olympic wrestling for NBC Sports in 2008 and continued in the role for every Olympics thereafter, including the 2016 Olympics in Rio de Janeiro.
